The rise of WILKS/Kansas City

When Wilks first took over the former CBS cluster in KC they, as expected, cut several positions. I thought that the bloodbath would cause the cluster to sink in the ratings. Was I ever wrong. Wilks had an excellent trend on Friday. They now look like they are going to give the Entercom cluster some good competition.

Does anybody in KC have any thoughts on what Wilks is doing right? I like the way they are positioning their country stations. KBEQ is targeted towards the younger country fan while KFKF leans older playing a classic country hit once an hour or so. Although the WOLF had a great Spring book, they could run into some trouble because the Wilks cluster has them sandwiched. Unlike other WOLF's across the country, WDAF has a younger leaning competitor.

Is there any data to back up the thought that people listen to CHR (KMXV) more often in the spring and summer, when the weather is nicer?

We run ads for both Q104 and the Wolf. Not being a country music fan, it would be difficult for me to distinguish between the two.

You can cut and cut and occasionally get lucky. Could Wilks be bringing Smooth Jazz to your area? Don't expect them to leave cluster as is. They've cut enough to feel safe to experiment. Wouldn't be surprised to see KCKC flip to it. Just a hunch. The BA Network is the cheapest satellite sign on in the country right now and those boys are sure selling it. No staff needed and no music to manage. And musicians make up the air staff, whether you know them or not. They're name brand in the format and that's all that matters. To many they sound like men from Mars but I'll bet they'll get a chance to land for awhile.
