The Rumor is true...WBGB Jacksonville to go to Cox

I've been reading about rumors that Cox was going to be buying WBGB-106.5 ("The Promise") in Jacksonville, FL. Apparently, it's true.
Question is: Will Cox keep the contemporary Christian format on "The Promise"? I think probably not. :(
Here's the link to the R&R story:

What makes you think they won't keep it Christian?

format change is likely...as with all of these purchases...depends on what they want to do in that market and what they do with their clusters....

It is a shame. Is there another CCM in the area? This link, I believe, sheds some light on Salem's cut and run. http://media.seekingalpha.com/article/10309
Here is the pertinent info from the conference call with what seems to be a disgruntled shareholder:

And it may come to the point, Ed, that given the disparity between some of your stations, the FMs not the AMs so much. It may come down to it that if some of your CCM stations can’t produce the way you expect, can’t drive the shares and the power ratios you expect, those stations are a lot more valuable. Okay, they’re lot more valuable to another operator than they are to us.

Those fundamental calculations are certain things that any broadcaster is going to make. And as David said, everything is on the table. We’ll look at it all.

It is not selling a million and a half dollar station in Richmond, Virginia or one in Parma, Ohio.

Well, we’re going to look at all options, and we’re going to pursue things that are in the best interests of the company in that area. But if they don’t perform — if the newly acquired stations don’t perform to the same level that the market expected, why is that? And that is largely because they’re losing an audience, perhaps to new media. We still need to have those properties because we’re going to develop the new media. I still feel okay with the strategy. But I hear you Bobby, we’re sensitive to your concerns, and we’re going to look at every option and we’re going to do what’s in the best interests of the company. I think if you look at where we’ve come from, I think our pattern is pretty clear, we’ve done that. So, I appreciate your concerns, and the questions are always stimulating and always help management to consider other options that we ought to look at. Any other questions?

Well, Sure. Going based on the history of the behavior of corporate entities when a purchase is ivolved, safe money is on a flip. And that's in any case.

But I was just curious to hear if 'passtheword' had any actual knowlege of a flip involved here, rather than just speculation based on the history of the behavior of coporate entities.

Just me 'probing'. =)

Come on, Gary...shouldn't you acknowledge your "probing" is coming from the newest employee of the acquiring company?

If anyone here is going to have an idea, odds are it's going to be you! ;D

LOL...Hey, man. SURE I'm a Cox guy now. But there's been no memo yet. So I'm just checking to see if someone else might be in the loop more than I am!

Trust me...there are plenty more individuals closer to the inner circle than me. =0

Smilin Tom, the PD and morning host there is a good guy. I just hope they don't can anyone there.

Tom is a great guy, definitely.

He'd be an asset to any station, anywhere...as would all the staff at Salem's WBGB.

:)

I prefer to think of Smilin' Tom as the station killer...this is the second Salem FM in a row (remember the Chicago Fish station?) that he has been a part of the end of...

Well... with a perspective like that, I'm sure we'd all be failures in your site.

Perhaps this is your humor again, but it isn't really very funny.

Tom is an amazing PD and an asset to any company he would be a part of. He is talented and smart and a genuine man. And he works in radio, where stations are bought and sold all the time.

At a time when his current situation is in a shift, you would post this? Yeah, that's productive. ugh!

I am sorry. That was harsh. :-\

I understand that you do some work for him.

I also understand how radio is, ever-shifting...it happens to the best and worst people--kind and mean, excellent and terrible at their jobs...what your opinion is of the people whom this is affecting is up to you.

Because I have worked in radio for such a long time, I have developed a "gallows" sense of humor. Sorry if it is too harsh for this board.

Jane, his wife.

Knowing what I know of Tom...

And knowing what I know of Cox...(I work for Cox)...

Tom would be a good cox PD. He's more than able.

Cox is a people company. My guess is that Tom would LOVE working for Cox. And if he wants to stay and take on the Cox philosophy, they'd probably welcome him into the family with open arms.

I don't moderate this board, so I can't speak to the degree your humor is harsh. But personally, I wouldn't use the word "harsh". Gallows is an interesting way to describe it indeed...anyway, that is off point.

Point is...it wouldn't make a difference if I had working experience with someone or not, I'm not going to slam them on a public forum (with any kind of humor).

True, Salem is a client, so of course you'll get a greater defense. Because of first hand experience.

BUT... every person deserves the respect of not being ridiculed with a post for the sake of something to say on a board.

Humor or not.

Jane....we are all entitled to post our thoughts. I have to disagree with you. I don't think Smilin Tom is a "station killer". I worked with him at the Fish in Chicago, he had nothing but a positive groove that he brought to the station. Getting sold to another company, changing formats, getting fired is just one of those things in radio.

;)

For goodness's sake, people! It's a joke.

My old partner called me the same thing after two very similar incidences.

I am officially the station killer. I thought it was funny--even when I was out of a job, because, and it is sad that I must explain this--because I had nothing to do with what happened.

Ugh!

Jane, his wife.

i'm pretty sure most knew it was a joke.

I found it hilarious. If people can't laugh at situations like that, their lives are probably a lot harder than they need to be.

Seriously, get over it, and get over yourself. It was obviously a joke.

Now that is just rude.

It's not a big enough deal to have it still be a topic. So...there really is no "over it" to get.

It was humor in bad taste, in my opinion. Others might feel differently.

But a direct insult to me? Absolutely unnecessary. Seriously, why on earth would you even take the time to post that?

And why would I? Totally off topic and I'm sure what no one is intersted in reading....

Anyone care to get this back on thread?
