The songs that Fresh makes fun of Lite for playing (even though they don't)

Can we make a list of all the songs Fresh 102.7 is using in their short clips of "old Lite music"? Here's a few I've heard so far:

Captain & Tennille - Love Will Keep Us Together (1975)
Joe Cocker & Jennifer Warnes - Up Where We Belong (1982)
Kenny Rogers - She Believes In Me (1979)
Neil Diamond - Hello Again (1981)

I think I've also heard them use a clip of some Jim Croce ballad I couldn't quite identify.

And the ironic thing is, I've heard Fresh play Phil Collins' "In The Air Tonight," from 1981... which is actually older than at least one song they're making fun of Lite for playing (even though they don't anymore).

I've also heard one of the no-last-name WWFS DJs talk up the "Today's Fresh Music" that her station plays... before introducing a Bonnie Raitt song ("Something To Talk About") from 1991.

It's all about the impression they create in listener's minds. Those songs that you listed just *sound* old and boring to the listeners Fresh is trying to grab. In the Air Tonight sounds a lot more "contemporary" than any of those songs, which are associated with sleepy elevator music. Also, by creating the impression in people's minds that Lite does play those old, boring songs, they help create and reinforce a stereotype, which in this case, is more important than the truth. Fresh isn't about to come out and say that Lite FM does in fact play much more contemporary and upbeat music, because that goes against the niche that Fresh is trying to create for itself and the idea it's trying to instill in listeners' minds.

It was funny when Fresh was using Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie" as an example of a "kids' song" they purposely weren't playing... then suddenly Lite added it to their playlist, so within a week or so, Fresh reneged upon their sweeper, and began playing it as well.

Lite was also one of the first stations in the country to pick up on James Blunt and Daniel Powter, and they were also very early on Carrie Underwood's "Before He Cheats."

They won't outsmart Ryan musically. He's too clever, too good. He's proven that.
Fresh needs to just continue to image themeselves as something worth listening to...bashing Lite will backfire in the long run.

the new 102.7 WOFA (see below)

today's repetitive, played out songs that NO ONE really wants to hear. In fact, our playlist is so tight- [EDIT]

The really stale music soccer mom's wanna go for... and cheesy, first name basis disc jockey's for you to fall in love with. spend your afternoon with our soft music and our passion for telling you over and over and over again about our website. and finally, you'll feel nice and fresh with our tacky green logo. it's that kind of logo that belongs on a feminine-fresh product. :)

I listen to Fresh 102 on occasion and hear those promos making fun of Lite FM (and the "old" music). I recognize some of the songs and my first reaction is always, "I really wouldn't mind it if Lite played that one."

Or sometimes "oh wow cool, I like this tune"...only to hear the song fade and go under the voice saying "that's TOO old!"

Fresh 102. Tampons for your brain.

The songs Fresh uses in the spots to jab at Lite are better than the new stuff being churned out by the talentless masses making music today.

Sorry, it is true.

Indeed it is! When I first heard Fresh use "She Believes In Me" as an example of "Too Old, Too Lite", my first thought was "WOW, I haven't heard Kenny Rogers on the radio in AGES!"

I haven't even heard Kenny's Christmas standard, "'Til The Season Comes 'Round Again", since about 1999 or 2000. Same thing with Alabama's "Another Tender Tennessee Christmas". Instead, when it comes to country-themed Christmas songs on pop music stations these days, we get "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer", or even worse, "Christmas Shoes".

Fresh is stale. It's an idea that puts CBS into a corner. When someone hears the word fresh, they think of what? New, homemade, refreshing, different, unique, original, etc. What CBS has done to 102.7 is misleading, deceptive and another recycled, rehashed idea only w/ a catchy name. And they wonder why the Lite's still back on top.

102.7 needs to switch to pure dance. Simple.

They'll find a way to run that into the ground too. :-\

Just like WKTU did. I know.....different owner, but same friggin' tight playlist and with songs that never flowed.

102.7 JACK-FM has a nice ring to it.

If only CBS would have put the format there instead os 101.1...

Fresh attacking Lite -- not very good

In Chicago, CBS-owned Fresh 105.9 does the same thing to Clear Channel-owned 93.9 Lite FM. Stuff like that is gonna work against CBS.

When Q104.3 hit the air late in 1993 it used a similar tactic. Back then Q104.3 played hard rock. Two years later Q104.3 was classic rock.

106.7 Lite FM would have been one of the first AC stations with "Before He Cheats". That song was huge at country radio before going pop.

See, this is where an idea is really Fresh....

Hire listeners.. Consult with them on the regular. Tony Santiago's got one hell of an brilliantly outspoken voice filled with ideas. I'm sure he'd be one marketable asset to the company that dares to be different and dances.. This could be done right without a tight playlist and songs that are picked by dance fanatics that know what song flows into the next one. Radio has become distant from most listeners, say perhaps contests, giveaways, etc.. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels like radio doesn't give a crap about my opinion, likes/dislikes. If I were an advertiser, yea, a different story. Prove the audience wrong. Ask them for 100% of their interaction, their knowledge, their opinion and use those tools to build something from the ground up. Sure it's a risk if your vision is only $20/$20, but it's a risky vision that would deliver results. I for one would give every ounce of my energy and dedication to a project like this.

Yes, I remember the sweepers berating then-alternative-leaning Z100 for playing "dance songs".

I'm generally against the idea of stations selling themselves based on what they don't offer, especially when specific songs/artists are cited, and it happens all too often. Positioning themselves as a more youthful alternative to traditional AC stations is fine, but just use the slogan "Today's Soft Music" and emphasize what they DO play, and they'll be able to convey that message more positively. And for goodness sake, a little personality never hurt anyone.

Of course, I'm only in my early 20s and even I feel that a lot of the so-called "tired old songs" have stood the test of time better than some of the purportedly "fresh" music they play. (Hootie & The Blowfish? Puh-leeze.) But that's just my personal taste talking - AC stations generally aren't my thing.

Hootie and the Blowfish.... wow, that just made me cringe. And it's only ever the same damn song, "I Only Wanna Be With You". ARGH!!

It's not a good sign when the DJ announces the artist of an upcoming song, and just by the artist, you automatically know which song is going to play. Like, "up next, Peter Gabriel"... and you know it's going to be "In Your Eyes", not "Sledgehammer".

That's acually a positive... once the listener knows that Sledgehammer is not coming up, they have expectations of hearing a good song, not one they dislike (Sledge researces with very high negs in every market I have seen AMT scores from). Once the listener understands "when they tell me an artist is coming up, I can be pretty sure it will be a song I actually like," the prepromotion is very effective.

My answer is NO! "Jack" is not coming to 102.7, over the last two years, "Jack" on 101.1 was evil! Maybe the evil villian of Howard Cogan was doing what he wanted since its debut back in June of 2005. I guess "Jack" was playing games like a Wicked Witch of the West from "The Wizard of Oz" where "Jack" turned 101.1 into a nightmare for two years.

After all that said and done, CBS-FM killed the evil "Jack" off the air and back to where it used to be since July of this year. I hope "Jack" will do better on 92.3 if they should get rid of K-Rock, because of its active rock nonsence since May where WFNY's former "Free-FM" pulled the plug and the WFNY calls now lives in Gloversville, NY on the AM dial at 1440 AM. I guess they brought back the WXRK calls when it was originally from Cleveland, OH and brought back to New York.

As for the thought question, as doctor Sniffen from the dentist says on "Board Reflections", "Put 'Jack' on 92.3!" let's forget K-Rock, and bring "Jack" to the table, not on 102.7, please for the love of my life! Stop messing around with "Fresh", becuase "Fresh" is also being heard in Chicago on 105.9 WCKG.

I guess "Fresh" is going to copy "Lite-FM" on 106.7. This is what they did with KTU and the former "Mix 102.7" copied it about two years ago, when Frankie Blue was kicked out of the station back in 2004 was saying inappropriate on the air about this contest stunt that was going on and using the KTU as a copy cat. That's why he was gone. That was from 2004 during Christmas where Frankie was drunk on the air.

I guess "Lite-FM" is mocking "Fresh", and the Clear Channel Joker will be happy to get back in the #1 spot in the trend. Too much Christmas music on that station. I guess maybe Batman will see the Clear Channel Joker play games for "Lite-FM". They let go Steven E Roy, Al Berstein, Bill Buckner and JJ Kennedy. But I guess Valere Smaldone is not going anywhere where she is the last one on board. If she continues to do so, they should do better, if she doesn't, maybe she will be letting her go once the year is over.

The Clear Channel Joker will be happy if WLTW continues to be #1 forever if it gets beaten by Batman or Robin, if I remember seeing it on TV or maybe in the comics, I would like to see "Lite" going back to #1 in the trend.

The other HV CC Joker stations like 92.1 and 98.5 both using the "Lite-FM" name, but I bet Batman will be beating themselves up to the punch. I guess they will continue to play Christmas music until it's over by Christmas Day. Bar none!

A liner I heard just a few seconds ago on 102.7:

"The Lite station plays old elevator music... we play today's Fresh music."

Talk about brainwashing...

I'm not sure what elevator they've been riding in, but their ad campaign is definitely getting stale. It's actually quite annoying if not pathetic..

Ok, so this is Today's Fresh Music?

Edwin McCain's I'll Be (1996)

Brian McKnight's Back At One (1999/2000?)

TLC Waterfalls (1994)

Hootie & The Blowfish (1995-1996-1997ish)

P!NK's Get The Party Started (2003-2004ish?)

Mind you, I was disgusted since day 1... It seemed like everytime I turned on 102.7 I'd hear Edwin McCain's I'll Be.... I'm like, for a station playing today's really fresh music, this sure seems quite old and dusty...

If Fresh were a person, they'd be snooty. They'd be cheap. They'd be loudly obnoxious and they'd go around touting around that they should be number one because they're the best to an audience that really didn't care to hear in the first place.

Cut the crap Fresh.. You can't dim the Lite so stop trying.... Go back to being a woman's sanitary napkin. :)
