The songs that Fresh makes fun of Lite for playing (even though they don't)

Mind you, I was disgusted since day 1... It seemed like everytime I turned on 102.7 I'd hear Edwin McCain's I'll Be....
Lately every time I turn on 102.7 I hear either Lifehouse's "You And Me" or Howie Day's "Collide".

Someone needs to tell "Fresh" that those songs were big on Lite... about two years ago!

How could I forget.. Lifehouse.. the biggest reason why I stopped listening to 94.3 the point back then.. they squeezed every last drop of life outta that song..

Someone just needs to tell Fresh to stop wasting their time and go back to that already dusty drawing board that's been through some of the silliest format flips/decisions NYC's ever seen.

(btw.. kevin, i hope you'll accept my friend request on the myspace)

The decision to put another AC format in NYC was a good one... unfortunately, Fresh is limiting its effectiveness by being too specifically targeted to white women in their 30s. Especially for NYC, Fresh has very little Black or Hispanic content in their playlist (playing Beyonce 10 times a day doesn't count). In order to truly compete with Lite, or even with CBS-FM, 102.7 needs to be much broader in its appeal, instead of essentially being the radio version of the "Lifetime" channel.

I agree. Fresh is not being, well, "fresh" enough. Lite FM may have had the playing field all to itself for many years, however, the music mix was constantly being updated on the station. Lite FM in 2007 doesn't sound like Lite FM in 2003, and Lite FM in 2003 didn't sound like Lite FM in 1999, and so on.

That said, reading some people's comments about Fresh, both here and on the "other" board, one would think that the station was a bigger failure than Blink or Mix 102.7 or Free FM. There's been a lot of venom about Fresh right from the get-go, and though it is not a very good station, its ratings are rather decent, even if they have plateaued in recent books. They're doing far better than Mix or Free FM ever did, yet those stations get more "love" from most people on the boards.

That's simply because "Fresh" is almost exclusively female-oriented, which of course a bunch of guys like us are not going to appreciate. The Rhythmic AC version of "Mix" was more gender-balanced in its appeal, and attracted a lot of the dance music fans who were hungry for an alternative to WKTU.

Can we make a list of all the songs Fresh 102.7 is using in their short clips of "old Lite music"? Here's a few I've heard so far:

Captain & Tennille - Love Will Keep Us Together (1975)
Joe Cocker & Jennifer Warnes - Up Where We Belong (1982)
Kenny Rogers - She Believes In Me (1979)
Neil Diamond - Hello Again (1981)

I think I've also heard them use a clip of some Jim Croce ballad I couldn't quite identify.
Another one I heard them use today:

Roberta Flack - The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (1972)

I actually really like "Fresh 102.7" and listen online almost daily. I like the fact that they are more contemporary and upbeat than some of the mainstream AC's. They are upbeat with the same feel and tempo as Hot AC but without being as rock based as most Hot AC's are. Sure personality wise, there isn't much going on, but musically, I really think this is where mainstream AC is going and I think this mix of 90's and now "is" the AC format for today's 30 and early 40 somethings. I don't really see the older 70s and early 80s titles coming back that much since the demos for those songs are slowly edging on upwards towards the top of the 25-54 demo. I think the more current based approach that Fresh is using is right on target and I like it quite a lot. (and yeah I'm a guy. I know I'm not in the target, but I've never really cared for male based formats like Rock, classic rock, alternative, etc. anyway. My tastes have always leaned more towards female formats like CHR, Hot AC, AC, Dance, etc.).
Anyway, judging from the ratings, I would say "Fresh" has already been a success. Sure, it has reached a plateau now but that plateau is a lot higher than where the numbers for their previous formats ("Mix", "Blink", and "FM Talk") were at. I don't think they are expecting to be #1, but being in the middle as opposed to the very bottom seems like a good move to me. (Oh, and speaking of the previous formats, I always kind of liked the short-lived "Blink" format. It was an odd concept as far as presentation, but musically, I thought it sounded great).

I just heard Fresh use Air Supply's 1981 hit "The One That You Love" as an example of a "too old, too Lite" song. Then they immediately followed it with Michael Bublé's "Home", which may not be old, but is certainly about as "Lite" as Fresh ever gets in its playlist.

Fresh is predictable. That's not really a fresh feeling concept. I know when I turn on Fresh, I'm going to hear the same songs, same artist, same cheesy liners. Nothing's going to stand out and make me want to take notice. Perhaps, it's because I'm a guy, I don't know. I'm not hearing anything exciting or different on this station and it's no different from PLJ, Lite fm, Magic 98.3, WSUS, WALK, WLEV or the dozens of other AC stations in NYC, NJ, CT, PA.

Bring back dance....or Move the anticipated Pulse to 102.7!!!!!!!!

The latest example of "Too Old, Too Lite" is a song by Engelbert Humperdinck. I didn't have a chance to jot down the lyrics and find out what song it is, but I definitely recognized the voice.

I think most of the songs that Fresh claims Lite is playing are even "Too Old, Too Lite" for WLTW's "Classic Lite" HD2 channel / web stream. I listened to "Classic Lite" for a while, and to me it sounds a lot like CBS-FM or NJ's "The Breeze". It is definitely not the Adult Pop Standards format that even WLTW claimed it was going to be.

Every time I tried to give a fair listen to "The Stale," I had to turn it off. I actually found it too DEPRESSING. The music selections make me feel down. I have to turn it off after a few minutes. If I had to choose between the two, I'd definitely make LITE my regular station. They're upbeat.

One year later, I still miss the Mix. They were vastly superior to KTU, in sound, DJs, Mix Nights, you name it. After the Mix flipped to Stale, I went to KTU, but I wasn't invested, even though I liked Jagger, Cubby Bryant, Judy Torres, and Al B. You might say that KTU made it easy for me to go to WCBS FM, and when 101.1 hired Sue O'Neal, that clinched the deal for me.

I agree that the Mix was more gender balanced in its appeal. Mix Nights were about 50/50 males to females. Lots of male callers to the station. Lots of guys are into dance, and hearing it on a classy, well put together station. KTU will never have class.

Bring back the Mix! The Stale is a downer.

That's my 2 cents.

In the beginning, I gave Fresh 102 a fair chance -- I'm in their target demographic after all. ::)

But the constant jabs at Lite FM got me angrier and angrier, especially when they were using songs that I LIKED and would DIE to hear on the radio again. So in essence, Fresh 102 was insulting my musical tastes...basically dismissing one of their listeners as irrelevant.

Screw them. They're the irrelevant ones. No more Dousche 102 for me!!!

We can't call them ****** 102.... That's too old and light...

The new Summers Eve 102.7- today's fresh floral ****** without that old stuff...

Another brilliant move by Fresh: last night, they played their "Fresh 50 of 2007" countdown from 8 PM to midnight, but they didn't announce the title, artist, or rank of the songs... they just played them in order as if they were doing their normal format. They repeated the countdown again at 9 AM today.

50 songs of 2007? They couldn't even do a Top 102.... that's sad. Obviously a last minute botched attempt that should've been ditched. What's worse... no one to announce the title or artist. I loved Z-100's top 100 of 2007. At least they provided quite a bit of entertaining information in between their countdown. I think Fresh 102.7 has finally reached its' lowest point. A station that throws together a sloppy hamburger helper like project and constantly takes jabs at another station will surely fail. When they pull the plug on this moldy concept, only then will it truly be a breath of fresh air(waves)... :)

Top 102? Yeah right, they probably didn't play that many current tracks this year.

Fresh's New Year's resolution should be to stop making jabs at Lite, the so-called "tired old songs" they supposedly play, and "kids' music" that they'll add after Lite plays it. Honestly, the music mix is fine for what it is, but just focus on that instead of trying to bring everything else down. That, and allow the jocks to show some personality. I'm not saying they should become total chatterboxes, but they should be allowed to ad-lib a bit and try to actually connect with the listeners.

I think Fresh sounds good. They sound like a Hot AC but right in the middle of Hot AC and AC. Also I do agree that Fresh 102.7 should just play music and not worry about saying Lite plays this song while we play "Today's Soft Music". I will say Fresh does play more new AC songs then Lite. Sure Lite does play a fair amount of new AC like Daughter, Fray, Nickelback, etc. Lite plays some 70s songs and others you wouldn't want to hear after a Daughter song. For the new year Fresh should drop the shots at Lite saying Lite plays this old song thats way to lite. Should Fresh stop making shots at Lite no. Fresh needs to say during this mornings drive we played 102 mins of music while over on Lite they only played 85 mins of music. Its kind of like when you got two CHR in the same market. One will say Kiss speeds up their music so they can play more music while at B 92 we play the song at its normal speed. I think this is a better way to take shots at the station Fresh is competing with. But they couldn't use that one as AC's don't speed their music up.
