The Spirit of Radio

In the spirit of the season, here's hoping you have a year of peace and love. I've loved radio since I got a GE AM/FM/SW set for Christmas when I was 10 and was fascinated by broadcasts from far away places. It led to a love of broadcasting, but not in the generic sense. What I respect in the business are broadcasters who respect the audience and have the gift to be able to connect to others in a personal way. Few remain today.

In Atlanta, I enjoyed watching or listening to, among others, H. Johnson, Alley Pat, Johnny Beckman, Don Kennedy, Bob Bailey, Jim Morrison, Caroline Mure, and believe it or not, Ian Punnett. It has been a pleasure to work with the last 5. I wonder how many future talents we will never hear due to the shrinking staffs in radio today.

So, in the spirit of peace and love, Merry Christmas. May you continue to connect with the people so that they will care enough to listen.

Good question. With the Telecommunications Act of 1996, as well as consolidation, reducing the staffs of most radio stations to a mere handful, even the future Rush Limbaugh's, let alone the Tom Joyner's, will be fortunate enough to even land a part-time board operator's job, let alone an entry-level on-air position. Yes, even those aforementioned fellows had to start somewhere.
