Well KOIT is more CHR leaning. Also we have more AC stations in this market but with variations. Hot AC, KUIC, KKDV, KKIQ, Alice 97.3.

I do remember in the early days of Alice they were supposed to compete against KFOG for the AAA format and audience.

I do know back in the 1990's some Smooth Jazz Artists such as Dave Koz and Kenny G had been included in Soft AC playlists. Today we sometimes have songs done by the TV show Glee get included on the KOIT playlist. The Last time I heard it on KOIT was in 2011.
 
If this article is prescient then KOIT may suffer long term damage with its move toward Top 40. Star seems to be a Hot AC that has successfully hit the mark between Top 40 and AC
 
KEZR is playing more Adult CHR. in the past 5 years, radio format is evolving to a more hybrid than ever before. KOIT should change their slogan to 'more pop less talk.'

I bristle (you should see my arms...) at the idea that "Top 40" is somehow equivalent to rock. It's not. Today's Top 40 would be largely hip-hop and (Nashville sound) country, the two biggest selling and listened-to genres. There'd actually be little rock in the mix at all.

Last I heard, KOIT was largely rock with a bunch of oldies.
 
There seems to be a movement, started mainly by Clear Channel to update the mainstream AC format. Listen to Lite in New York or KOST in Los Angeles and they don't sound remotely close to what they did in 2010. It's been a process. The jingles on Lite are especially awful. KOST tried using Reel World, as Lite does and it was a huge fail. They went back to JAM, but the changes have taken a lot of the soul out of the format, and I don't mean soul music. CC went on a kick a few years ago to rid these stations of long time air talent too, mostly to save money and bring in cheaper talent, and it really shows. It just sounds so generic now, they all sound alike...
 
I think the radio industry in general is trying to rid itself of anything smacking of an "adult" music format. I guess "adult" smacks of "not our target" with advertisers.

On the other hand, it's radio, which smacks of "not my medium" with most young people

And then there are those who will take a hostage if they ever hear the words "Oppan Gangnam Style" one more time.

It's not easy being soft.......
