THE THER GUY WANTS EMMIS TO HIRE BERGER TO RUN WXRP

You can't be for real. Berger hasn't been a PD in this town in over 20 years. Little short story about Berger. I applied for jobs with Scott Shannon's Z-100 in the mid-'80s and ABC's WPLJ. Both CHR at the time.

Shannon had a car pick me to meet with him in NJ after his Zoo show. He offered me a gig. It's wasn't on the air. I just left WBLI and I wanted st stay on the air. All 3 radio stations are rated P-1 by Radio and Records. In most cases you have to be a good jock to get hired BY A P-1 station. Now, I sent a tape and resume to Z-100 & WPLJ.

I received a letter from Berger with an invite to go out to dinner with him. I called him up ASAP. I really wanted to work for the underdog PLJ. At dinner, I asked Berger if he listened to my tape. He told me I need some more work. OK. I can deal with that.

I was trying to get Berger to add "Mandolay" by La Flavour. It was a HUGE club hit with the area clubs. I thought it would be a great add to the station playlist. Berger told me he never heard of the song. If you're going to be a PD you have to know the music your listeners may enjoy.

Now, this guy wants to have Emmis hire him to run WXRP. My free advice to Emmis...pass!

What Springfieldrad probably meant to say is that the moderator of the "Dentist" board is calling for Emmis to hire Larry Berger. It's one of the main threads over there at the moment.

Correction....the title of thread should read...."The Other Guy Wants Emmis To Hire Berger to Run WXRP". Sorry. I think faster than I type. Spell check messes me up. I wish the would give us more time to correct errors.

PS - The thread above got the message correct.

I remember at one point WPLJ had a show on Sunday nights where Berger took phone calls from listeners asking questions regarding the station. I dinstinctly recall hearing Berger tell one caller that he never listened to other radio stations in the market, which I found to be either very closed minded or an outright lie. How can a PD of a major market radio station not listen to the competition? Or not listen to other stations just to keep abreast of the situation in his home market? Sounded very strange to me.

Still wrong. Their call letters are WRXP.

So, let's see if we have this straight: Job applicant starts plugging record during dinner/job interview. PD doesn't know record, won't add it and won't hire applicant. Therefore, applicant implies PD is no good.

OK, oh all-knowledgable one: What's your track record in major-market radio? How long were you PD of a top-rated money-making station? And lastly, how does your head fit through the doorway?

At the time PLJ was CHR it took many hits from Shannon for being a copy cat. Shannon was 100% right. I believe Hot 103 was getting attention. So my point to Berger was to add a tune that may bring over a Hot 103 listener. I was in many clubs in the late '80s. When "Mandolay" came on the crowds enjoyed it. I would say it's one of the top 10 club tunes at the time. For a PD not to know the name of this song that might be played on a CHR station in NYC is absurd. I'm sure if I mentioned a rock tune by Bruce Springsteen he would have known about it.

Your other comments are ridiculous and will not be addressed. Please try to act like a professional.

Since you can't answer my questions, you attack the questioner. How's that working out for you?

Lots of statements ("I believe...," "I would say...") without so much as a shred of proof. If you think you're fooling anyone into thinking you're some sort of professional, think again.

Those who can, do. Those who can't...

I remember trying to call into Larry Berger's Sunday night show, after they flipped to CHR. I was one of the real angry people.

I remember it like it was yesterday. I went to bed one night, and PLJ was playing Pink Floyd's "Welcome to the Machine". And when I woke up the next morning, I heard Jim Kerr introducing Lionel Richie's "You Are" and Sergio Mendes "Never Gonna Let You Go"

Sorry for the aside, but I am still traumatized by that day!

You do understand that Shannon DID NOT play it on Z-100 either.

But not nearly as shocked as Sergio Mendes was.
