Tony, WEMP's first PPM comprises exactly 5 days of the full time news format. So I don't think you can safely say that its "first PPM was lower than WRXP". At least give them a few months for people to sample and see if it sticks before you start your crusade yet again for someone to adopt a niche format. News, even female leaning, is less niche than dance music is.
News can have a female lean in the presentation and selection of stories, just as a sports station will lean male because they're talking about sports. Or a music station will have a female lean if they're playing female friendly records.
I have some questions about WEMP's presentation and story choice, but let's give it some time to find it's sea legs before you start pounding the drum (or synth drum) for another owner to change it to dance.
And again, if dance was viable for sustainable numbers (sales numbers--the only ones that count at the end of the day), someone would be doing it right now.
And I DID say let's see what the next PPM numbers have in store for WEMP. I also acknowledge that radio programmers are having a heck of a time dealing with that "beast" known as PPM
But I STILL say, being that New York City is a rhythmic market that a dance station CAN work here. Pulse 87 was a great station that had financial issues
BEFORE Pulse 87 launched. If anything, Pulse was "bailing the water" out of the sinking "ship" of Mega Media yet the boat was sinking anyway. The format in itself had NOTHING to do with it. It was finances, the signal and location.
Sales? I honestly DO NOT think that most sales representatives understand how to "sell" dance. It's one thing to hear the music, but with the various "schools" of dance here, it takes more than statistics and data. Let's face it, if you're going to sell a product, then you HAVE to know what you are selling. And I think most people who sell don't frequent the clubs to get that idea of what the crowd is about. That's always been the problem regarding dance in that sense. Having said that, let's not get this confused with what 'KTU is doing because even though they have been VERY successful with their presentation, that has a more older lean as opposed to a younger crowd that tuned into a Pulse 87.
I honestly think the numbers are THERE. It's just up to a corporation to study and see the potential profits such a station can make. And if you use "tunnelvision" by looking at Pulse's presentation (not counting the outside anomalies), then you can see that Pulse 87 did a proper presentation based on the demos they were seeking.
I'll say it for the 234,265,055th time, if Pulse was above 92 on a New York City based frequency, the station would STILL be around and always in the top 5.
But then again, PPM......that is the beast holding things back although 92.3 Now is doing what they can.
As it is I am supporting 92.3 Now and I'm just seeing how things are going with their CHR presentation though they are more "dance friendly" than a Z-100 based on the demos they are reaching out for.
