The type of Rock Stations I wish we had in NYC

RXP is a major joke. They are horrendous. WE need a station like the following:
94.3 WCYY-Portland (This station is absolutely amazing)
92.7/96.9 WRRV-Middletown (Great station overall)
GRock Radio (RIP) Great station
Radio 104.5-Philly
Radio 104.1-Hartford
Rock 92.3-New Orleans (Just Launched and I love it)
RXP isn't working, I say if CC can buy more stations either they buy it or Citadel or some station that knows how to do Rock. Emmis clearly doesn't. It doesn't even fit with their stations! Hot 97 & whatever else it owns doesnt fit it at all. are they joking me?

WRXP is actually sounding pretty close to Radio 104.5 these days, except that they play AC/DC and Tom Petty instead of The Fray and Fall Out Boy. I don't think any of those bands fit with the majority of the music played on either of these stations, and I doubt dropping them would have any negative effect on their ratings. I still can't figure out why RXP won't just go straight-up alternative. I don't expect them to be as adventurous as WFNX or latter-day G-Rock (let alone FM 106.3), but they could at least lose the out-of-place classic rock.

If RXP brought in Lisa Paige, would you then like them?

Neither can any other person who enjoys modern rock music in NYC.

I agree RXP is turtle snail paced moving in a Radio 104.5 direction but still has too much AAA to be there yet. Hopefully they figure it out before it's too late.

I don't want to say that they won't figure it out, but my hopes aren't high - my cynical prediction is that they'll never figure it out, or they'll only be allowed to figure it out because the powers that be will have decided they're changing the format soon anyway, so why not let them have a little fun for a few months before they get blown up.

Actually, I'd bet they *have* figured it out, but not in a way that can be presented to Emmis such that they have confidence that it'll succeed.

That's a shame. But I fear it's the truth.

The problem is advertisers. Advertisers don't want Alternative fans in their shops, regardless of the station's ratings, or as Macy's once famously put it when they pulled advertising from the New York Post, "Your readers [listeners] are our shoplifters." Which is bogus, but is a perception issue Alternative's been pushing against ever since the last good format at 101.9

Down here at Matt's old Jersey Shore stomping grounds, I'm showing signs of life on HD2 doing Modern Rock. I don't have to worry about advertisers' perceptions, just the listeners', and it looks like they're perceiving just fine.

Meanwhile, at the 106.3 frequency here at the Shore, they seem content to have lower ratings for a hit station than they did for alternative. The only way I can justify that behavior is to suspect that they're making more money billing for advertising now than they did before, even with lower ratings. Emmis may be facing the same issue.

Today, 'RXP played "Loser" by Beck and after the end of the song, the jock came on the air talking about the 30th anniversary of "Back In Black" (the AC/DC album in case you aren't sure).

The small amount of Metallica that had been added to the playlist a month or so ago has been dropped, however an obscene amount of Linkin Park (who loosely fit the term "rock" and are far less talented than Metallica) is still being played.

'RXP has a habit of playing a song that may not have been heard on the radio in a while, and then repeating that song several times throughout the week so the novelty is quickly worn off (ex. Queens of the Stone Age's "No One Knows", Alice In Chains' "Down In A Hole").

To someone not familiar with 'RXP, they would seem like a poorly structured alternative station that throws in an occasional AC/DC/Van Halen/GNR song just to "stay true to their 'rock' slogan".

I was listening to RXP last night at 10PM eastern time and listened for around 2 hours (I was listening online from the LA area) and it's not that bad, I could see where the tweaks could come in though. The New Music Show is pretty good and they had a live performance by the band Locksley that day (none of the Alternative Stations in LA ever have small bands play on the air, even at 10PM) and the station was filled with 90's gold just like every other Alternative station in the US (which I personally don't like, but if it's popular, it's popular). I would personally listen to this over 98.7 and KROQ here in LA because it has a lot more variety and tends to play deeper cuts. The AAA part of the station seems to be disappearing as we speak. One station that I think should be the model of the ideal Alternative station would be FM 94/9 in San Diego. Now that's ONE good rock station that could work in NY and LA! Deep cuts, 80's and 90's gold and tons of new music combined onto one station.

They were still playing Metallica as of yesterday, and it's too early to tell if they were suddenly dropped today. As far as Metallica vs. Linkin Park, I can't argue with the talent comparison, but I think LP fits the format better.

Also, I fail to see how Linkin Park is not rock. But then again a lot of people seem to have a narrower definition of rock than I do these days. People complain about classic rock stations playing Fleetwood Mac or the Eagles, but the AOR stations in the 70's and 80's went softer than that.

It'd be nice if they picked up on th indie-psychadelia thing that grew out of the new nu-rave movement of the last decade. It'd be nice to hear that sound in place of cop-rock.

They need to go to all new alternative and do it now!
