Depends.... Are you talking the City of Birmingham or the 8 county* Birmingham/Hoover Metro area?

*Bibb, Blount, Walker, Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, Chilton (and sometimes Cullman)

According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 921,721 inhabitants. The 2008 Census estimate puts the Birmingham-Hoover-Cullman CSA at 1,198,932. The statistical area consists of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Area (metropolitan statistical area) and the Cullman, AL μSA (micropolitan statistical area). It is the 48th largest population sub-region in the United States, and the largest population region in Alabama constituting roughly 1/4th of the state's population. Nearby counties Tuscaloosa, Etowah, Talladega, and Calhoun, though not officially a part of Greater Birmingham, contribute significantly to the region's economy. If the counties are added to the Greater Birmingham Metro population it would exceed over 1.7 million.

What counties are included in the ratings market of Birmingham? I know the ratings show a 12+ population of 886.400 making it market 57 but I don't know how wide of an area that includes.

there is a reason those stations failed. money. if you appeal to the people listed above there isn't a lot of money going to be spent with your advertisers. beer and ciggies don't advertise heavily on radio (ciggies not at all) and they have yet to legalise pot so there is no advertising dollars there.

Pre-Citadel X with a blowtorch signal didn't failed and was actually one of the top modern rock stations in the country at its peak. We all know what happened to it after Citadel took over. The point is The X didn't become successful until it moved over to a blowtorch signal and new rock on fm all over the country started to become popular. Right now, it's the downward swing (unfortunately) for new rock/modern rock/alternative rock on fm radio. It remains to be seen if the new rock format will ever pick right back up due to the other ways the younger generation get their music and the frustration over fm rock radio not playing anything else other than Nickelback and burnt out tracks.

I have an HD radio and I getting the Vulcan 105.5 Rock format on HD-2. It's 4:15pm and I and hearing Careless Whispers by Seether.

The ID on the screen says WVVB-HD-2. I love this HD.
 
I'm was born and raised in, Houston and now I'm living in, Yuma,Arizona. I would drive through Bigmingham to go see my mom and dad in Baltimore. I would always look foward to hearing that radio station. It's sad to see that station go. I think another rock station will pop up sooner or later. Birmingham, is a pretty good size city.

Didn't you guys have an xfl team for a while? LOL
