The WHOLE Tracy Johnson story... AND some other San Diego nuz...

Since what was posted here was WAAAY vague (and so you don't have to go digging for it)...

According to All Access, Tracy Jonnson is quitting (resigning, etc) not fired, so that he can take the job as COO (whatever that means, Corporate Operations Officer?) of M2O media (whatever that is, consultants?). Reg Johns is the CEO.
Of course, pundits will spin: Is he leaving early to avoid being let go? Probably not, and lets face it, programming a JACK is probably not the most challenging job in the world. But it surely means changes in the way KFMB AM and FM are operated, and soon. Bet on it!


But there's a second story out of San Diego this week and it concerns KSON/KSOQ, KiFM, and KBZT. It turns out that Lincoln Financial is unhappy with the results from the stations they bought from Jefferson Pilot, and is putting them up for sale (if I read it correcly). CBS has said they wanted to expand in San Diego. Could this be the door they were looking for?

SDR, you have your work cut out for you when you come back. We are all Staying Tuned to see what happens.

COO is a fairly common corporate term for Chief Operating Officer -- as opposed to the CEO, who is the Chief Executive Officer.

Regardless of their feelings on the stations' performance, I think it was always in the cards for LF to eventually sell off the broadcast properties. I guess they decided to wait a while after the sale to explore their options...
 
well, they are an invester group, that's what they do. buy low and sell higher. the question is, will they be able to do that here?
 
its not really that complicated. Lincoln Financial is an Insurance and Financial Services Company. When they bought Jefferson Pilot they were buying J-P's core business which was Insurance.
Now that the dust is settled from that purchase they can shed the assets of the company they purchased that don't fit their core business. They believe this is a good time to get a lot of money for their assets and their shareholders will appreciate their astute deal making.
 
Does anyone recall why Star 100.7 flipped to the 'JACK-FM' format in the first place?

It was arguably the best and most prestigious Hot AC station in America, having won station of the year and PD of the year (for TH) at leas TWICE from those within the industry in an annual poll which R&R has held for many, many years.

Also, isn't CBS trying to get out of the radio business altogether?

Granted, having the chance to buy & own two nationally-prominent powerhouses such as KIFM & KSON isn't an opportunity that comes along all THAT often.

That especially goes for KSON, but KIFM is a heck of a station as well.

What the HECK are you talking about? Where did CBS say they were trying to get out of the radio business? Do you mean because they sold some under performing stations in smaller markets? That's a long way to go to say that they want out. In fact, they publicly stated that they wanted to expand into larger markets, and mentioned San Diego by name, as a market they want to focus on. Do a Google search, the story is there (somewhere).

As for 100.7 going JACK, this too was heavily discussed here. David Eduardo (among others) told you why: MONEY The station management thought that the return on investment did not justify the format. Star's Hot AC format was really a watered down Mainstream CHR, and thus, very expensive to run. Now, with JACK they go after a similar audience but without the cost of paying on-air talent. So the answer to what you are asking is, yes, they were a very well known Hot AC, but the cash flow wasn't there. That's why 94.1 jumped at the chance to take over, and that's why Star is now on 94.1. For how long? That's a different story.

I think Tracy Johnson said it best "we were riding a horse that was getting tried." Hot AC really is just another name for Mainstream CHR now, with no definite consensus on what the format is. Check out all the message boards, its a topic comming up in almost every market that has a Hot AC, with people asking: "what they playing now?"

You know, the thing is, when Mike Glickenhaus left FCB, people started talking about it here like it was common knowledge. I kept asking for a link. Everyone kept saying "google it." Finally someone said "it was in Allaccess, blah blah blah..."
But guess what? I never got the link.

Meanwhile, the "Star" to "JACK" thing was heavily discussed, dissected, debated, and hey, that's a lot of d's! Links were given, Tracy gave a video interview, and I think even the President of the General assembly spoke or something (Ok, I made that last one up). Plenty was out there, but it was a while ago, (yup, JACK's been around since Ought 5, and look, its 07 now).

So now, I'm supposed to go though all that, including the fact that the messages from then are all but gone, and put out a link?

Finally, there was a promotional video that Tracy gave where he quoted Bob Myers (station owner) that "He turned to me and said 'we are riding a horse that is getting tired, (which is Hot AC), and along comes this younger, faster horse..." I believe it was for some kind of media consultant company (Sparknet?), but I can not find it, sorry. (Maybe Jack Garrett can enlighten us). But it did happen.

Not to beat this poor dead horsie some more :p, but I was the one who posted it's the "it's on All Access" reply ...the reason I didn't provide a link is that most of All Access's....access...is limited to one signing in with a username and password. I'm not sure if it was posted on any other industry website; I just heard about it through very reliable word-to-mouth.

Just to throw in a little tidbit that I don't think has been mentioned here, Trip Reed (or Reeb?)is the acting GM at FCB. I don't think it's been mentioned in any articles, but it's not really a deep dark secret or anything insanely significant. Just something I thought I'd pass along for shucks and giggles :)
