the worlds greatest radio station - and then some

May 31, 1964:

That night, the CBS game show What's My Line? aired live from New York, as usual. The game was still going on when the show started(though it ended within that half-hour), and panelist Bennett Cerf was a few minutes late joining everyone else. He apologized, and said he'd been listening to the radio broadcast of an 'amazing ball game' that was still tied after (at that point)21 or 22 innings. I guess he had to find out how it ended during the commercials.
The Giants won both games of the doubleheader, with the first one lasting 'only' about 2 and a half hours.

That game took 7 hours 23 minutes to play and went 23 innings. The Giants won, 8-6. It ended at around 11:30 PM New York time.

Willie Mays was then in the prime of his career and had many fans in New York. When he came to the plate at Shea Stadium on that weekend in 1964, he received a standing ovation from Mets' fans. Every game of that series was sold out. I was at the game on the previous Friday night. The Mets won, 4-2.

Whenever the Giants visited New York during Willie Mays' career, those games were sold out months in advance. Great baseball memories! :)

Jim Lange did color on 49ers broadcasts in 1965, and Gene Nelson did color in 1978, according to research from the San Francisco 49ers archives.

We have the full list of 49er broadcasters at:

http://www.bayarearadio.org/sports/49ers/index.shtml

I noticed on the list there is no color man listed for 1977, which was the year of my visit to SF. I'm almost certain (do correct me if I'm wrong) that Jim Lange was on the broadcast of the game I listened to on KSFO. In fact, I think I read in the sports pages of the Chronicle during my visit that Jim Lange would be teamed with Lon Simmons for the '77 season. Any way to find out if this is indeed true? ???

KSFO and KMPC back in the day....

Just stumbled on this site..what memories. My years at KSFO (I started when I was 18 yrs old in 1969) were some of the best times I remember. KMPC was a lot of fun, but as someone posted about GWB it was a case of one company two different corporate cultures. I thought the management at KMPC were of bunch of stiffs..of course I was 21 at the time so everybody seemed like a stiff, plus I was born and raised as a 5th generation San Franciscan. At KMPC I was deep in enemy territory.
