Trust me. It's happened to all of us. The World is full of liars. About 16 years ago I was looking to get a job at WALE. Isn't that where we all went when we were desperate! lol. So Battaglia had me in for a meeting and played some mind games with me. He asked me what I wanted to do there. I told him that I wanted my own show and would be happy to do some Production work as well. Then he tried to convince me into a sales position. I told him I wasn't interested in Sales. I wanted to be on the air. That's what I was trained for. That's what I had experience in and that is the position that I desired. So I told him a No Go on the sales job. Then for 20 solid minutes he continued to try and coax me into a Sales job. Then he tried to use some Psychology on me. He says: "
Ya know..... I would hire you today if you gave me the right answer". I responded... huh? What's the right answer? Then he thought it would be fun to play silly games with my head and continually tell me that he wouldn't tell me what the right answer was...... BUT.... that he would hire me when I gave it to him. Finally I just ended up leaving. This interview was making me ill. So I went home and thought about it. Obviously he just wanted me to Sell air time as a way to pay for my own show. God forbid the Money actually came out of his pocket. It would have been a great tragedy if they had to actually hire a real sales staff seperately from the Air Staff. How dare I even think that they could operate like a REAL Radio station! :

So I sat and thought about this for weeks. Then I decided to call the PD. I don't remember her full name. But I do remember that it was a woman and her name was Criss. I called each day, every day, sometimes two or three times. Every single time I called, the secretary asked who I was. As soon as I said John Chartier, she would then tell me that Criss was in a meeting. I would then leave a message and NEVER would get a call back. In my mind this was the sign of being one of the most ignorant people on the planet. After two or three weeks of this it became apparent that she was Bull S'ng me. Anybody who knows me will tell you that I am very intuitive and I can pick up on ANYONE who is trying to feed me a line of crap. Apparently Criss had some real bad judgement and was pathetic enough to actually have the receptionist lie for her on a daily basis. So one day I once again called up the station. The receptionist answers the phone and I go through my usual routine and ask if Criss is available. As soon as I state my name, She tells me that Criss is out of the building for the day. I had already heard this excuse a good 10 or 15 times before. So I hung up the phone. I then sit on my couch for about two hours...... and then I stood up and said
FU** THIS SH**! This game is old and I'm not playing it anymore. So I then call the Radio station again. This time I do my best impression. The receptionist asks who's calling. I tell her that It's Dick Clark from Dick Clark Productions and that I would like to speak to Criss about syndicating my Radio Program to the station. Then not even three seconds goes by and guess who picks up the phone.
IT'S CRISS Six weeks of calling this dame got me nowhere. But the second that I say it's Dick Clark on the phone she magically appears! What a load of crap! I'll never forget it. She was so pissed that I caught her in a lie that she threatened to call the cops on me for harrassment. I laughed and told her that this will teach you to lie to people. I then hung up the phone and never called that dump again! It was obvious that the whole Station was about playing Games with people. In retrospect I am so glad that I never actually worked there. I'm certain that with Management like that things would never have lasted. The unfortunate thing is that this immature behavior seems to be pretty common among Radio Management. They are always to busy to call you back. But they arn't to busy to go Golfing, to surf the internet, to sit and watch the TV in their office... etc. It has taught me an important lesson in Human Psychology. When people don't call you back, it doesn't mean that they don't have time. If they give you the "NO TIME" excuse it's pure B.S. Same thing with the "MEETING EXCUSE" and "THE OUT OF THE BUILDING FOR THE DAY" excuse. In actuality it all means the exact same thing. It means.......
WE ARN'T INTERESTED IN YOU AND WE PROBABLY WILL NEVER BE INTERESTED IN YOU, SO TAKE THE HINT AND GO AWAY! Now that I have translated this for you, then perhaps it will save you time in the future. Any Radio station Manager that treats you like this has a bigger problem than you ever will. You might need a job, but they are the ones who need a lesson in human relations. Can you imagine being so pathetic that you don't even have the maturity or common courtesy to get on the phone with someone and be respectful and honest? Instead you are just going to continually lie to them about how busy you are???? Some people should be totally ashamed that they are in the Communications Business when it's painfully obvious that they don't even have the skills to communicate! I know General Managers in Huge Radio markets who will actually take calls from listeners and make it a point to return calls from every single person who contacts them. Try calling General Manager "Tom Chiusano" at WFNY FM New York. Formally Howard Stern's old station (WXRK). Tom is a true Class act. Nicest guy in the world who will always give people the respect they deserve. If you call him... you are virtually guaranteed at least a call back. He will not engage you in childish "DODGE PHONE Games. Now my point is that if the General Manager for a CBS owned and operated Radio station in Market Number 1 always has time to talk to you. Then please tell me what lame ass excuse does a PD or GM of a Radio station in a tiny market have for never returning your call? In all reality there is No Excuse. It's called being Lazy and having a lack of maturity and a lack of communication skills. The only exception to this rule is either a celebrity or the Management of a huge corporation that gets literally hundreds of phone calls each day. Then there realisticly may not be ENOUGH TIME to get back to everyone. However don't actually believe that the Management of a small 1,000 Watt station or 5,000 Watt station does not have "TIME" to call or e-mail you back. They've got the time. Unfortunately they don't have Human relation skills. To anybody involved in this business... Good Luck! With some of these Management teams, You'll need it.
