There Once Was A Radio Station 94.3 WRQR

Last Friday my friend Bill Cozart brought a tupperware container full of WRQR airchecks from 1982-1989. This was my hometown station. The station came on the air March 21st 1974. The station had a rich history from 74-82 but I was a little young to appreciate that era. My era was 81-96.I was lucky to work for WRQR from July 30th 1983 until September 1st 1996. I also did alot on WGHB the AM country station.Sometimes things you have a senimental value for you tend to think it was better than it really was. Hearing these airchecks reminds me how good WRQR was. So many memories, contests, songs, stories of such a great station come to mind. Thanks Coz for bringing the tapes.I have laughed, cried & just simply had a blast listening to this stuff. If I start naming names It would take all night. It just reminded me how good local radio was and could be again.

I remember listening to WRQR in the 70's. They were AOR back then, with this rather unorthodox announcer named Allan Handleman. The station billed themselves as "The top of the rock", and were sort of an Eastern NC version of WQDR, which was also AOR at the time.

Sometime around 77-78 they flipped to CHR, and us denim wearing rock types were NOT happy.

Correct me if I'm wrong about this, but I recall the AM sister had the unfortunate call "WFAG". If so, changing them to GHB was a good move.

94.3 did some serious rocking in those days. Thanks for jogging the memories, Allen!

Hey Don,
WRQR was a great rock station from 74-80.WFAG stood for "Watch Farmville Area Grow" it became WGHB when Gene Gray & Steve Hardy were partners Gray-Hardy Broadcasting in 1979-80. I'm from Farmville and I used to ride my bike to the station just to hang out. I caught the bug & I'll still have it as bad today as I did then. 2009 will be WRQR's 35th anniversary. I'm hoping to help put together some kind of reunion. I hope egos don't get in the way of that. There were so many talented people who contributed to what was a great station & a great time
for Eastern NC radio.

Some of us gray hairs (and no hairs :D) should get together and pool these memories into a book!

I've been trying to find information about WRQR

I worked there late summer-early winter 1988(?). I remember a Halloween remote broadcast at a bar in Greenville(sort of). What brought it to mind was a song I remember being crazy about at the time, but cannot for the life of me recall the title of or lyrics to now. There isn't anywhere I could find playlists from that era is there? I don't recall keeping track of such things.
