There should be a channel that doesn't show reruns of reruns

Today I was working at my computer with the TV on in the background. It was on TV Land. They were showing the A Team. After a couple minutes with it on in the background and I was concentrating on something else, it occurred to me, hasn’t this show been seen enough!? Actually I never liked it when it ran the first time. Then I started thinking about other shows that are run over & over again. When the contract on one channel ends they just move over to another. Sleuth is now running Miami Vice. I know it has run on Spike, TV Land, I think USA, local TV reruns and who knows where else. Little House on the Prairie, although an excellent show, is now airing on both TV Land and Hallmark, and for many years on TBS on my cable system. Bonanza is on TV Land and I or PAX (whatever it is) maybe we should count it three times. Encore Western Channel was running the black and white episodes of Gunsmoke. That was fun to watch but they ran them into the ground and replaced it Alias Smith & Jones and the Big Valley! Both have run over & over again elsewhere on regular cable. Why would I want to pay for that on a premium channel? Goodbye Encore Westerns.
So I guess what I am saying, wouldn’t it be nice to have an entertainment channel that didn’t show what we have seen over and over again. No Love Boat, Happy Days, or Charlie’s Angels. There are plenty of great westerns that are never shown. Where’s Wagon Train or Tales of Wells Fargo? How about sitcoms like Too Close For Comfort, or Dobie Gillis? You know, I might even pay for it as a premium channel. Oh yes, please don’t give me the B &W curse. As I said maybe it could be a premium channel where color or B & W wouldn’t matter.

In the beginning that's what Nick at Nite and TV Land were all about, showing classic TV shows such as Dennis The Menace,Donna Reed,My Three Sons,Patty Duke,Dobie Gillis,The Lucy Show,The Monkees,Mary Tyler Moore,Rhoda, etc.

Nick at Nite seems to have a bad habit in reruning their shows into the ground so to speak such as Full House,Roseanne,Fresh Prince and The Cosby Show where they have and are already ran their runs on TBS and local stations and in some cities all 4 shows are still on the air.

Ditto for TV Land, although Hunter is a good show since when did it become a classic and also it has had its run on TBS and local stations. Look at how they are treating What's Happening!! and showing it at 10:00 P.M. Central where it should air in the afternoons like it did years ago in syndication.

I agree with you about having a channel where we can watch classic TV and shows that we haven't seen in a while. One Day At A Time, The Fall Guy,Trapper John M.D.,Silver Spoons,Alice are among a bunch of shows I want to see again.

They have a channel like this. It's called "the DVD player."

Seriously check out some used CD stores and often times you can get DVDs used (never had one in bad condition) for as little as $20/season
______________

I wonder how the British handle reruns of their shows, and the same goes for the Aussies.

Also, I'm wondering if there's anyone in this forum who's from the U.K. or Australia who could provide some insight into this discussion.
Edited by Davros2006 on 01/23/06 02:54 AM.

I have seen many Public Domain DVD's of various shows-Not all the same shows either..for $1 each for 3-10 episodes or 20-30 shows for $10 or under. There was a thread on this in June..Link Below

Yes, I agree. In fact, how about OLD OLD Shows like Playhouse 90, and Kraft Playhouse. and some of the old live tv dramas that were only seen once after they aired for the first time. I think I remember something on Pbs called the golden age of Television that was on years ago, and it showed old dramas that aired live, and were airchecked.
One of the reasons I got on to the clasic tv board, was so I could reconstruct days of old tv using my dvd player. For instance, Take a retro schedule from say, 1955, and find as many shows as I can on dvd and load my changer and watch for an evening.
It would be fon to see old showes on over the air or cable tv.

I am not a big DVD buyer but I have to say the ones I have bought or seen of classic shows like Jack Benny or Burns & Allen have been mostly disappointing. They are usually from the very early days of TV. Poor quailty of both the condition of the film (lots of times it's a kinescope) and the general production. As time went on both improved. I'd like to see the later seasons.
The only show that seemed to go down hill as the seasons rolled on was The Adventures of Superman. The photography, direction, scripts, and acting were all superior the first season. I did buy that but won't bother with the later seasons. By the way, anybody hear about when The Untouchables will show up on DVD?

Remember, that most folks who watched all of those old shows saw them mixed with lots of snow and white noise. Unless you lived in a big city with a tv station close by, or in a small market with a tv station, you had to view them from a distance. O.k, if you had a good tuner. Otherwise, you had to put up with a lot of garbage.
I'll take the kinescopes every time.
