They played We Belong by Pat Benetar on KZOK

Pat was helped greatly by MTV in the video age. This genre has pretty much disappeared. Of course the internet has replaced MTV today, and it is more difficult to get a big hit, with some rare exceptions. Music artists today have a bigger challenge. My belief is while some may get new music online, it will never create hits like radio and MTV did. That era is over.

It depends on the format. In country, Luke Combs went from playing small clubs in a van to selling out stadiums in a little over 5 years. Every one of his radio singles went to #1, all of his albums have dominated the charts, and he just won Entertainer of the Year for the second time. Morgan Wallen is right behind him, and is on pace to do the same next year.

Please sum this up for me.
Did KZoK play We Belong because it was a bit about her being nominated into The Rock and roll Hall of Fame, or is this station like Q 1043 with really sounding classic hits at times with the pop they play which is to compete with a strong Classic Hits competitor and Play that role in varying degrees as part of cluster strategy in taking on another in market cluster?

It's simpler than all that: We Belong is a hit. Full stop.

Yeah, that era was over before the pandemic hit. YouTube and Vevo have replaced MTV, and there is no curated playlist. it's like the Wild West, with literally millions of songs on the 'playlist', and so much competition for eyes and ears; a lot more than was available on music broadcast media in the 80s and 90s.

Country is still alive in that manner, as BigA frequently mentions, but give it enough time. The US is less and less 'country' with each generation.

Don't let Bobcat's hardhat buddies see that playlist. They'll be traumatized.
And those hardhatters back in 1984 must have flipped out, dropping their nail guns and hammers when KZOK played Scandal "Warrior", The Fixx "Less Than Zero", and The Cars "Drive".

Those are both interesting lists. Interesting that I know more from the 1974 list than I do from the list 10 years later. Of the new adds that week, We Belong is the only one I know.

The 1984 list contains a bunch of album tracks. The '74 list is 100 percent singles.

Here's KISW for October 19, 1984. A bit harder (Krokus, Iron Maiden), but otherwise similar to KZOK that same week.

But before you could smash your head to Krokus on KISW, you had to sit through "Missing You" John Waite.

Construction Workers of The Northwest: Don't blame us, Or KISW. Blame 1984. Big Brother ran everything that year. It was all we could do to (CENSORED BY THE THOUGHT POLICE) and dodge the Tele-Screens.

What did you think the music was going to sound like?

It was a tough year. Have mercy.

Perhaps, but Country is just like Christian, Bluegrass, Raggea (sp?) and a dozen or so other virtually unknown genres. Country, in particular, could easily be considered a musical cult given their fans live a lifestyle through the music (and performers) and their songs sound very similar if not virtually identical. Put on a big Bakersfield Belt Buckle and a big hat and yer all set to yodel away some hit music. That's fer the guys of course. Females only need knee high boots and some big hair ('cept for Dolly.....evry one loves Dolly....an Reba). An don't fergit the green stuff that goes on the boot soles.

An jus' 'cause the music ain't so good the line dancin' is so we all havin' a good time down at the Dew Drop Inn.

KZOK, that 1974 standout is the 'lost' Elton John hit, "Sick City". It was a hit B-side. It was played on KJR as well, in fact it got a lot of airplay.

And for years I couldn't find it on an album. Finally had to special order the single with the B-side.

Seeing Barry White on a KZOK playlist seems a bit unusual. I doubt it made it to their gold category after 1979 or so, when they went more towards the "classic rock" we know them for now.
