How can I EVER forget the April Fools Day stunt that Jeff Wicker pulled on Z-93 listeners back on 4-1-1993? This stunt went pretty deep, and actually had me believing that Z was changing formats, because they had short spots airing throughout the previous week of an announcer saying something like GT was changing Dayton radio again and for details to listen to Wicker at 7 AM THURSDAY. The most important part of this hoax was THEY NEVER SAID IT WAS APRIL FOOLS DAY OR APRIL 1. Here it is verbatim. I have this thing on tape somewhere...However, this is straight from my memory banks... ;D
Kim Faris coming out of the news...
JEFF WICKER: Thank you Kim, it's 7:02. At this time, WGTZ, owned and operated by Great Trails Broadcasting, after an extensive research project, has determined it is time to change Dayton radio. At this time, WGTZ Z-93, will become WGTZ, Z-Country...
ANNOUNCER: The most and best country favorites are on 92.9 Z-Country, just the way you like it!("Rhinestone Cowboy" begins to play).
I remember being so pissed off that Z-93 was gone that I stopped recording on tape...However, I did keep listening until time to go to school on my trusty Sharp Walkman while I was riding the big yellow taxi. ;D I remember Wicker and Kim Faris taking calls from pissed off listeners...Until shortly after 8AM, when they finally admitted it was a joke, by going, WGTZ Eaton, Z-Country, NOOOOT! Rock and Roll...and then segued into "Do You Believe In Us?" by Jon Secada.
