Thom Brennaman contract is through 2010, I hope the Reds do the right thing and

I like Thom. I wonder how much longer Marty will be doing Reds broadcasts, if he's one of those guys that's going to call games until they die or if he will retire at some point. If Marty is thinking of retiring, we'll need a professional broadcaster in the booth. As much as I like Jeff Brantley, he hasn't been in the business as long as Thom.

Marty has suggested that he will retire after 2010.

If you actually listen to Thom, he actually reminds you of Steve Whats-his-name, who last got sacked.

Lots of fill in with extra-phony sounding incredulity built-in and no real life baseball experience. If you ask me, he's just TOO professional sounding. What I want is a baseball person, not a professional announcer.

I didn't hear much of an uproar when he left AZ and now I know why. Kinda like the Griffey deal.

Trust me, the fans don't give a damn about having a father hand off the announcing baton to his son. It shouldn't happen.

Maybe not, but it will probably happen.

brian65---I actually agree with most of what you said, except for the last part. I do think Reds fans care who Marty hands the baton off too, and most would probably want Thom. I am not a big Thom fan, but would be ok if he was the choice. I do like Jeff and the chemistry he has with Marty and Thom. The Steve in question would be Steve Stewart---who I still think got a raw deal in the end, but that's a whole other topic....

I haven't cared much for Thom's work on Fox, but then again the mess and Tim Tebow love-fest that was the "BCS on Fox" may have had something to do with it.

I figure I'm in the minority, but my vote goes to Dan Hoard. Unlike Thom, Hoard sounds like he is genuinely having fun. I find it a chore to listen to Thom, not so w/Hoard.

I like Thom. It's obvious that he tries to have some opinion on something to add to the play-by-play. While his opinions many times sound logical, it should be mentioned that he always has one to give. Thom also needs to turn down the volume of his voice just a bit. He always seems to be speaking just a little louder than the other person he is broadcasting with.

Thom should take over for George Grande. Grande is past his prime and it is painful to struggle through games with him behind the TV mic. He uses the same few phrases to describe plays.

This current road trip has been so refreshing without any Grande to listen to.

Thom actually criticizes the Reds when they deserve it -- George doesn't even think about criticism of a team that has not had a winning record in nine seasons.

Also, Brantley is great along side either Brennaman, on TV or radio.

I guess you don't like Marty.

Speaking of Brantley...

Has anyone noticed his borrowing of Mel Allen's famous "how about that"?????

Actually, I had a Reds game on in the background, and did a double-take when I heard it. Cowboy's drawl is similar to Allen's.

The Reds by far have the best announce team in baseball and no changes need to be made. Here is how I would rank the best & worst in baseball.

1. Reds
2. Dodgers
3. Brewers
4. Phillies

Worst by far

1. Nationals
2. Cubs
3. Toronto

You are in the minority.

Dan Hoard is so vanilla he makes pistachio sound exciting.

I don't dislike Dan Hoard, I just can't imagine him being the voice of the Reds full time.

Just a little to dry for my tastes.

Amen!
I don't think the Reds have the best announce team in the game, but other than Grande it's up there. The Dodgers and Phillies are good, but I would take away the Brewers and add the Mets. Cubs TV is pretty good; Ron Santo drags down Cubs radio broadcasts to the point where I, a lifelong Cubs fan, can barely stand to listen even with Pat Hughes on the call.
I liked Steve Stewart and agree he got a raw deal. IMO, after Marty retires or at least cuts back to home games (as many announcers do) continue to rotate Thom between TV and radio, bring Steve Stewart back to go where Thom isn't and keep Brantley and Welsh as radio and TV analysts respectively. And gently ease Grande out the door.

I can certainly agree with that. Those Chubs announcers make me sick. They go into orgasmic thrills every time they score a run and you would think it is game seven of the world series. The White Sox announcers are like watching paint dry if the other team scores any runs. Marty and Joe were the best. Now we have lost Nuxie but I like The Cowboy quite a bit and Thom is not bad. I just get tired of them switching around all the time with the TV announcers being on the radio and vice versa. Just fire all of the TV guys and pipe the radio feed in like they did in the old days. Nobody listens to the tv feed if they can avoid it.

I just wish the Reds would get on a decent station in Louisville, KY. They are always on a low power dud (1000 watts after 6:00pm) and the signal is poor. 700 WLW just doesn't come in very well down here with all the interference we have these days. I have been an XM subscriber for over 4 years but when the Reds are on the road that means other announcers since XM only carries the home team feed (which I think is stupid but that is a topic for another board). The Reds used to be on 790AM here with a great signal years ago but that is now for Bats games...like anyone listens to those.

At least 700 WLW is still almost all local programming. I can't believe Clear Channel has not ruined them like most of their other stations (WHAS 840AM is a joke now). I miss Gary Burbank though since I can't stand Tracy Jones. He is an automatic turn off for me.

Anyone who claims to listen to the Reds radio broadcast while watching it on TV is an outright liar.

The delay offset is about 3-4 seconds and it would drive anyone insane to actually watch it that way.

But if one has a DVR, then you know how to use this to your advantage.
