THOM HARTMANN RATINGS IMPRESSIVE GROWTH IN LA, SFO, SEA, DEN, PHX, DET, DENVER

See the M25-54 Hartmann numbers at this link. Scroll down for the Talkers Magazine ad. Interesting that Denver went up. Also see Monterey / Santa Cruz poll with overwhelming support for Hartmann and Rhodes over Ed Schultz. 760 KKZN could take an on-line poll.

You know you're tragic. I saw the 25-54 breakouts here. Tom did not go up. He did not do any better or any worse than the rest of AAR across the country. Why don't you give us the 25-54 numbers in SF, LA, Chicago, NYC? I mean this is madness on your part. Stop lying about Hartman and AAR's numbers across the country. Take New York City. What does he have there? Or how about LA? This is just plain crazy. I can see why anyone who is in radio would not want to post here.

Jay,

By stating that numbers posted by Thom Hartmann on his own web site, from an ad posted in Talkers Magazine, are not true, again, indicates to me why nobody in radio posts here.

Why do you not trust Hartmann's credibility in Talkers magazine?

Re: THOM HARTMANN RATINGS IMPRESSIVE GROWTH IN LA, SFO, SEA, DEN, PHX, DET, DENV

Because most people in radio know the numbers can be toyed with. Are those numbers 25-54 total adults based on share?

Why are you asking me when Kris is down the hall and has all the numbers? Please leave me alone.

A 400% increase on KPHX Phoenix (one of the worst signals in the Valley, even during the day) means that Hartmann's audience went from 4 listeners to 20. ;D

Re: THOM HARTMANN RATINGS IMPRESSIVE GROWTH IN LA, SFO, SEA, DEN, PHX, DET, DENV

Jay, I'm glad you haven't left. :)

In reading the posts here and on the replacement of Thom Hartmann with Ed Schultz in Boulder, I felt the need to give the perspective from Columbus.

Franklin County, which is an urban blue county, is completely surrounded by rural red counties. The local talk show which replaced the third hour of Randi Rhodes is now getting calls not only from outside the Outerbelt (I-270 around Columbus) but from the rural counties surrounding us. Add to that the fact that Stephanie Miller and Ed Schultz have already been to Columbus, and the decision to focus the schedule around these two hosts and Bill Press was a no-brainer for General Manager Gary Richards.

Even the die-hard Thom Hartmann fans are fully aware of Big Eddie's wide appeal. No pun intended.

And despite the issues with getting dedicated satellite feeds, listeners are finding the station.

I'm not dismissing the numbers for Thom Hartmann...but as Lionel has probably found out after leaving WOR, Jones Radio Networks is becoming the dominant player in progressive talk. Ed Schultz has the biggest numbers, Stephanie Miller outnumbers Lionel as far as affiliates, and Bill Press is now the lone national progressive talker in morning drive.

And, unlike Air America, advertisers never put Jones' talkers on a blacklist.

Two other things I will mention here:

I have heard Jay substitute for Big Eddie. I'm surprised Jones didn't consider him to go national opposite Randi Rhodes.

As for Mario Solis-Marich...I heard him with Elayne Boosler when she substituted for Steph. He's good. I hope he's also picked up to go national.

Personally, I would love to see Jones make an offer to buy up Air America from Mark Green. It may be the only way for progressive talk to actually start making inroads and attract a larger and more diverse audience.

1480 doesn't cover the entire market, but that's one factor limiting liberal station ratings.
The Conservative hosts are on the 50kW-ers out there because they got there first.

However, 1480 is a regional channel so the power could potentially go up. The liberal stations sometimes have limited coverage. The various liberal networks (Air America, NOVA-M, and Jones) could collaborate resources to hire a certified broadcast engineer to assess the viability of increasing power for various facilities. That's what CBS Radio did in Seattle, their new daytime pattern (after approval by FCC) will compete with KIRO and KOMO.

At sunset KPHX 1480 makes it to Kingman, AZ and sometimes to Las Vegas, NV.
I can check and see what stations are limiting them to 5,000 watts daytime and only 500W at night.

50 kW-ers? Well, KTAR-FM runs 100 kW but we're not talking about Toaster Talk. The 50 kW AM stations are brokered (KFNX 1100), banging a bible (KPXQ 1360), and pimping Disney (KMIK 1580), the latter being the only full-time blowtorch (and that's a stretch given their 6 towers for nighttime use) in the metro. 1100 and 1360 run 1000 watts at night and cover very little of the metro at that time.

The conservative talkers here are KFYI 550 (5 kW days, 1 kW nights ND with Rush, Hannity, & Savage) and KKNT 960 (5 kW DA-N with the Salem bunch). Of the 21 AM stations in metro Phoenix, only KFYI and KTAR cover the entire market (50 mile radius from downtown).

I'd be surprised if that ever happens. First of all, Nova-M doesn't own the station. Continental Broadcasting does, and has for many years. I honestly don't know if this station makes a dime for Nova-M after they pay the rent to Continental.

Even if they were able to run 50 kW on 1480, that would give less coverage than KFYI's 5 kW on 550. Ground wave propagation is what it is.

...by that scale, WSCR Chicago must only be getting 75 listeners with their 50kw ;D ...

Re: THOM HARTMANN RATINGS IMPRESSIVE GROWTH IN LA, SFO, SEA, DEN, PHX, DET, DENV

Having read this thread the sad thing is Tom you have run off a guy like Marvin who has years in radio. He's a real pro. I used to check him out at night on WLS. He asked you a valid question as to where you worked. You never would answer him. Plus, you have taken what he said in the context of this board and spread it all over the internet as if to lead people to think Marvin had something to do with his station dropping Tom.

You have done a real number not only on Marvin but all of us who want to talk about radio, and guys like Marvin can teach us something about how radio works. You owe this board and Marvin an I'm sorry for what I have done. I for one have been sitting back reading all this with great sorrow. This could be a great place to learn from Marvin and other pros like him. Now they won't come near here because of your views being blinded by your politics, and your lack of candor as to where you work and for whom.

A very sad state of affairs and you should be ashamed of yourself. What gives you the right to judge a station where your not even in the city its in? If you are in radio then let this board know. Otherwise stop acting as if you are.

"Having read this thread the sad thing is Tom you have run off a guy like Marvin who has years in radio. He's a real pro. I used to check him out at night on WLS. He asked you a valid question as to where you worked. You never would answer him."

My email is posted in my profile if he wishes to contact me privately. Like most people here, I choose not to disclose my affilaitions.

"Plus, you have taken what he said in the context of this board and spread it all over the internet as if to lead people to think Marvin had something to do with his station dropping Tom."

That is your assumption and it's not true. I have never said that Jay was responsible for KKZN dropping Hartmann.

"You have done a real number not only on Marvin but all of us who want to talk about radio, and guys like Marvin can teach us something about how radio works."

I haven't attacked Marvin here. I have no issues with any liberal talk hosts, unfortunately, the converse cannot be said.

"You owe this board and Marvin an I'm sorry for what I have done. I for one have been sitting back reading all this with great sorrow. This could be a great place to learn from Marvin and other pros like him. "

I don't owe anyone anything. This is a discussion / opinion board. I wrote my opinions and did not violate any of the rules. You write very articulately like Jay Marvin does, and like Jay, you keep spelling THom's name wrong. And, you just logged in to the forum. Maybe Jay Marvin asked you to post this, or, maybe Jay posted this under a new email. LOL

My views are based on the FACTS - see Thom's ratings at http://thomhartmann.com -

"A very sad state of affairs and you should be ashamed of yourself. What gives you the right to judge a station where your not even in the city its in?"

I study market demographics because I do affiliate relations marketing, so I am free to comment on any market in the country where I've done research.

All your efforts to embarrass me will not work, because I have a good reputation among the people I work with in the radio biz. You and Jay Marvin have got to stop accusing Thom of posting inaccurate ratings in his Talkers magazine ad. Michael Harrison is an ethical person and would never allow this. -T

Re: THOM HARTMANN RATINGS IMPRESSIVE GROWTH IN LA, SFO, SEA, DEN, PHX, DET, DENV

Well this so called Jay Marvin is supposed to be the same Jay Marvin who is the AM Drive Time host on Denver CO 790 AM Prog Talk station. I wonder why Ed Schultz haven't ask him to guest host anymore. This so called Jay Marvin is what I called a Fox News "liberal" he will poo poo any success that Thom Hartmann have.

Re: THOM HARTMANN RATINGS IMPRESSIVE GROWTH IN LA, SFO, SEA, DEN, PHX, DET, DENV

OK, here's my last post. You can take this or leave it. Here are Hartman's numbers in the last book adults 25-54 in four of this countries major markets. These numbers do not come from a magazine ad. You can not tinker with these. They are not based on TSL, cume, AVQH. These are 25-54 numbers the money demo. Anyone in radio knows what this means.

1. LA KFI 3.2 KLSX 3.5 KABC 1.4 KTLK .9

NYC WABC 1.6 WOR .6 WWRL .4

SF 1.6

Chicago .1

Also I have never posted under any other name than my own. As I said here in Denver 25-54 I have a 1.1 Hartman had .5, Schultz had a 1.4 and Randy a 1.5. Now you want to tell me and everyone else on this board and on this thread these are great numbers? Now why don't you go cross post these on Thom's forum? And for all I know you could be Hartman himself. As far as I'm concerned this is over. I proved my point. I, and others, have lived by these numbers all of our lives in radio. Adults 25-54 is the standard. I had nothing to do with Hartman's exit from AM760. Maybe they thought they could get better numbers with Schultz.

Yeah I gotta agree, that was a pretty classless move to imply he led to that show getting yanked with nothing to back it up. This plus the ridiculous pimping has gone on enough. I will follow your classless move by outing you for who you are Tom.

Hi Dale,

This is Tom from Radio-Info and we've discussed the financing of liberal talk.

I represent Peter B. Collins to affiliates. I've attached our promotional materials and a link to a DEMO CD.

It looks like you have a solid lineup M-F. However, some of our affiliates run the program on weekends.

If you have any weekend time, I think that Peter B. Collins would meet the goals of the progressive interest group challenging the WVNN ideological stance.

(Note: Peter DOES NOT purchase time on ANY station for his program and will never do this.)

Peter is from Cincinatti, you will note an accent. When Peter substituted for Ed Schultz, Ed joked that Peter sounds like Al Gore. I think that Peter's voice inflections and Midwest sense of humor will resonate VERY well with your listeners.

Let me know what you think of the demo. The link and other promo materials are attached as a microsoft word document.

Thanks

Ouch! You mean this guy reps Peter B (a great talent whom I know from the Bay Area) and can't read an ARB? This is a guy who cross posted my comments on Hartman's board leading people to think I got him blown out? Hmmm. That's sad. Really sad. Well, if I'm ever asked about Peter B I'll be sure and pass this info on. In fact maybe I should post it on my blog? Hey, Tom Lane now everyone knows who you are. Thanks Dale. I owe you one.

DALE AND JAY.........

Reposting company names and full names sent in private *CONFIDENTIAL* e-mails is against the terms of service, you acts of retaliation are childish and will accomplish nothing.

However, it could backfire on Dale and Jay, if my company (or, Peter. B.'s company) gets more inquiries. Remember......Peter B. is Thom's regular substitute host. And....we are gaining on Air America and Jones, including Jay's buddy and Kris's favorite host on 760, Ed Schultz.

What if the new 760 pm drive host gets low ratings? Well...we're next in line, LIVE M-F 3p-6p PT.

Nevertheless, I have written the moderator to ask that my name and company name be deleted, although there really is no such thing as bad publicity.

Jay, your comments here are unfortunate. Hundreds have read your attacks on me, and I didn't start any of this.

Meanwhile, Thom and Peter B. are both fully aware of what is going on here, and would fully defend my position if they chose to login and post.

So what can I say? We welcome further inquiries to the Peter B. Collins show.

Thanks for the promotion.

See ya,

It may and I hope it does, there are only two people on these boards hoping for other people's failure,

1. You with Jay Marvin
2. Sean Gilbow with Me

The rest of us get this is about business not politics.

Re: THOM HARTMANN RATINGS IMPRESSIVE GROWTH IN LA, SFO, SEA, DEN, PHX, DET, DENV

Tom, I notice you didn't respond to my posting of numbers. I never got an e-mail from you other than the e-mails you sent to my home e-mail. I think what you need to do is go back over to Hartman's web site and tell those people the truth that I did not have anything to do with AM760 changing the station's lineup. You want to talk about breaking rules? Why did you turn around and cross post my comments over there and stir up trouble from people who don't even listen to the station and live out of town. Your move now has my mailbox clogged up at work. And for what? Once again I posted Hartman's 25-54's in this country's major market and you didn't respond. Instead you ran to the people who run this site. Well, I know who you are. And if there is any damage to me over this, and with a .5 I doubt there will be, but if there is I'll know who started it. So if I were you I'd fix it and fix it now. After 33 years in radio have a lot of friends who I know would love to hear this story. Now that's all I have to say. Let's see if you're a stand up guy and will fix what you broke.
