Thought I was the only one who forgot about TNT's 2nd season "Dallas" premiere

Thought I was the only one who forgot about TNT's 2nd season "Dallas" premiere

Racking my brain to remember, I haven't watched a lot of TNT, TBS, tru TVor any of the Turner networks for anything specific lately--but those channels usually do great cross-promotion across their channels and promos on other places (network TV and web ads). So when I happened to look at a friend's Facebook status about 9:38 CT Monday night first reminding me of the 2nd season Dallas premiere (more than 90 minutes after it started)...crap! I stayed up to watch the 10pm-12 midnight replays.

I guess I wasn't alone in forgetting: An almost 60% drop in viewers from the July 2012 debut premiere.

What's funny is that I only now remember TNT mentioning the January premiere during the credits of the season finale episode. But since then, I don't honestly recall seeing one promo for the 2nd season premiere at all, even after Larry Hagman's death last November. Did TNT screw up the timeslot (January, along with several other new premieres) or the promotion?

Re: Thought I was the only one who forgot about TNT's 2nd season "Dallas" premiere

Now that you mention it...I don't recall seeing any promos for "Dallas" outside of TNT's own air.

As for the season premiere itself....I see some development going on in the characters of "John-Ross" (Josh Henderson), and "Pamela Rebecca Barnes" (Julie Gonzalo)...and I like what I see. These two are really going to be the ones we LOVE to HATE!!

Also, I think I'm going to enjoy the interplay between "Ann" and her ex-husband "Harris".

As for the rest?....Eh....

Re: Thought I was the only one who forgot about TNT's 2nd season "Dallas" premiere

They've been running promos for "Dallas" on the TVs on display at Walmart, repeatedly, along with promos for that "King of the Nerds" show TBS is running.

Re: Thought I was the only one who forgot about TNT's 2nd season "Dallas" premiere

I watched all of last season and liked the show. But when I tuned into the season premiere last week I just couldn't get into it. I decided I'll no longer be watching.

Re: Thought I was the only one who forgot about TNT's 2nd season "Dallas" premiere

So at the end of last night's (3/4) episode, JR is apparently shot. He is on the phone with John Ross and we see JR look up towards someone who has walked in the room. The camera cuts to John Ross who then hears 2 gunshots over the phone and starts yelling "Dad!" into the phone but there is no answer. JR is in Saudi Arabia, I believe. at the time.

The previews for next week show a massive gathering for JR's funeral. There are apparently lots and lots of former castmembers who will be on hand including Cliff Barnes who shows up possibly drunk and only to cause trouble. It will be interesting to hear if any of the family members mention actually having seen JR's body.

Gary Ewing (Ted Shackelford) was in much of last night's episode. Haven't seen him in many years and he looks noticeably older. His backstory is that he and Valene are separated after Gary fell off the wagon a year ago. This is Gary's first time back in Dallas in many years. I'm guessing he probably went back for Bobby's funeral in season 8 of the mother series but, then again, that wouldn't count because season 8 was just a dream. ;D

Can't wait to see next week's episode!0

Re: Thought I was the only one who forgot about TNT's 2nd season "Dallas" premiere

They are burning through story lines WAY to fast. For example, the hostage situation we had last week would have lasted three weeks on the CBS version. When Dallas was produced by Lorimar, they took the time to develop characters and story lines. Now, it's almost like a sitcom where everything is solved within a 60 minute show.

Re: Thought I was the only one who forgot about TNT's 2nd season "Dallas" premiere

Is it still a nighttime soap if it moves this fast?

Haven't the nighttime soaps always moved along at a faster pace than thier daytime cousins?

Then again, television as a whole has gotten faster paced since 1978, when "Dallas" first debuted. My hunch is that the people producing this new "Dallas" are taking thier cues from today's popular fast-paced "procedural" shows.

As for the show itself....Is it possible that the powers that be are planning to "darken" the character of "Sue-Ellen" to partially commpensate for the void left by Larry Hagman?

Is it just me?....Or is the "Christopher" character becoming increasingly whiny and annoying? Just sayin'.

And at least for me, anyway, "John-Ross" and "Pamela Barnes" are still the ones that keep my attention focused.

Re: Thought I was the only one who forgot about TNT's 2nd season "Dallas" premiere

Let's not forget that compared to the original series, the new Dallas features less episodes (10 last season, 15 this year) than the original (about 26 a season on average).

Might be that they hurried through some active storylines so that they could deal with JR's death ASAP following Larry Hagman's death. I believe Hagman had taken part in the first 5 or 6 episodes. His final scenes as JR, as mentioned in the above link, may have been pieced together from previously cut scenes.

Re: Thought I was the only one who forgot about TNT's 2nd season "Dallas" premiere

I don't think "cut" as much I believe "scenes shot based on his health. Many of his apperances in season two have been alone or in two shots where he appears to be in the same room with others.

The bloggers say one of his last scenes he shot before passing was in the courtroom when Bobbys wife was on trial. My thought was it might have been where he's discovering the internet and Angry Birds, and emails Bobby with the virus that erases evidence against he and John Ross. He looked extremely frail, more so than usual.

The next few episodes should be very telling... I wonder if JR left a video will :)

And that's something else I don't understand. When did programmers start breaking up the seasons like this? For example, the Missus and I were ready to watch Nashville last night. It was a flipping rerun. What happened to the eight straight months of new programs and reruns during the summer? I've stopped watching shows because of this crap. They whine and bitch about DVRs when it seems like they are pushing us more into using them.

I have asked that same question several times on this board in the past. The weather in most of the country has been bad this week, so the network have a captive audience. But what do the networks do? Air repeat episodes of most of their shows. And the reason some on this board will give is because May is sweeps month so all the networks save their season finales for May. Yet where I live (Nashville), the weather starts turning nice in late March/early April and with it not getting dark until later in the evening and with grandchildren playing baseball, I'm not sitting inside the house watching NEW EPISODES of the Network shows and I bet there are a lot of other people that do that also. When will the network take that into consideration?

ABC was a bit of a crap shoot last night. The Middle was new, and Modern Family and Nashville were reruns, with a new Suburgatory sandwiched in-between them. Made no sense at all.

I can only guess that since television seems to be geared for the east coast, the programs are on "later" there, when it is after dark. We see the same feed that the east-coasters do, but like you said, it is often still daylight here. But that is okay. I don't need to stay up as late in order to see the late local news. ;D

I have a hunch we're going to be treated to the best TV "reading of the will" scene in many years.

Re: Thought I was the only one who forgot about TNT's 2nd season "Dallas" premiere

I'm glad they're handling it quickly. With Jock in the original series, it was seven months after Jim Davis actually died before Jock's death was addressed. As a viewer, you found yourself hoping maybe they wouldn't kill him off and that Jock wasn't really dead.
IMO, the original series was never as good after Jock died. I hope the new one doesn't go to crap without JR.

Who shot J.R.?

You know it had to be said.

The Neighbors was new as well.

Amazingly, I watched Modern Family because it didn't seem familiar. And yet when Phil and Claire were naked and the nudists showed up, I knew I had seen that. Perhaps I missed the beginning of the episode the first time around.

Re: Thought I was the only one who forgot about TNT's 2nd season "Dallas" premiere

Got home late, missed the 9pm eastern showing, caught the 2nd half of the 11pm eastern encore. Not a bad episode, honoring JR/Larry Hagman.

And, this is how they included JR in last week's episode even though Hagman had passed away, all through the miracle of modern technology. :
