No cause of death given. He won two World Series rings with the Cardinals (1964 & 1967), also played for the Phillies, Expos, and Red Sox, and went on to be a long-time broadcaster. He retired as a player in 1980 and as a broadcaster in 2022.

There was an incident in the early 90s stemming from McCarver being critical of Deion Sanders playing both baseball and football where the seasons overlap (Sanders played for the Braves and Falcons). During a post game interview, McCarver was holding a live mic when Sanders poured a bucket of water on him. "You're a real man, Deion," McCarver deadpanned.
