TIME OF BCN/MIX 104.1 FLIP TOMORROW? (8/11)

Richard J. Cabral said:
Around 3:40 AM, dead air occurred for just over 30 seconds. After that, the original Mix 98.5 audio chain "profile" appears to have been loaded. Again I will ASSUME, but I believe an engineer probably copied all of the settings (AGC, compression, limiting and other) from the Optimod of 98.5 over to 104.1 and around that time, loaded it, bringing the audio chain over to the 104.1 frequency.

I was recording during that time. Just looked at the waveform. OMG ! BCN's processing, you could see the dynamics - peaks and valleys. MIX processing is a BRICK. Very fatiguing to listen to. Wish they didn't switch.

Changing the processor settings can be done easily. The Omnia.6 can be tweaked to sound loud and proud or soft and transparent (and anything in between). Talk presets are standard on most modern processors and just need to be tweaked for loudness and texture. The attack and release time constants differ between talk and music formats as does the amount of overall /AGC/compression needed for consistency. The Omnia in 104.1's audio chain be adjusted to sound like it did on 98.5 (in most cases). I agree that when Mix was on 98.5 there were noticeable clipping artifacts which would "square off" the wave form. Most modern music and older remastered stuff is already clipped to death before it hits the processing making things sound worse. In most cases the PD has significant input on how the processing sounds (engineers and PDs may not see eye to eye when it comes to processing).

I appears that they're figuring most Mix listening will be done at "office volume" or at a reasonable level in the car. Once the volume is turned up, the station is painful to listen to.... and I'm referring to the audio quality not to the new 104.1 format ;-)

WBZ-TV is reporting a 3:00 AM launch with a "special guest."

The 98.5 The Sports Hub WBZ-FM site (http://www.cbssports.com/local/boston/about-us) has information on air talent.

The homepage has some discrepancies...
Toucher & Rich (5:00 AM-10:00 AM or 6:00 AM-10:00 AM; take your pick I guess)
Tanguay & Zolak (10:00 AM-2:00 PM)
Felger & Massarotti (2:00 PM-6:00 PM)
Damon Amendolara (6:00 PM-10:00 PM; or 7:00 PM-10:00 PM; again, whichever you prefer I suppose).

I thought this all happened tonight! Can't believe I missed it! Hopefully someone uploads some recodings.

I agree, I never thought the 98.5 processing sounded good for a Hot AC station, and unfortunately the same settings were brought over to 104.1. BCN's progressing I liked, why they changed it is beyond me (probably because Hot AC isn't exactly a format you turn up full blast, compared to rock.)

Mix 104.1 sounds much better than Mix 98.5, Mix 98.5 is a tired name and it was laid to rest FINALLY!

Sad that BCN is gone...

im confused since toucher and rich said they weren't on untill friday. i bet the special guest will be bob lobel he will probrobly fill in for them tomorrow. but 3am??? weird time and i am getting sick of this mix move crap who cares mix sucks they killed wbcn so i will never listen to them ever. bring wbcn back with a classic and new rock mix like whjy regards

Does anyone know if 98.5 plans to have any solo hosts?

I know that Toucher & Rich are popular, but does anyone else think that they are missing out on a golden opportunity here?

I was expecting them to run an ALL SPORTS morning show... since what runs on 850 between the hours of 6-10am is anything BUT... and I know a lot of people are put out by that...

I can only guess that they are hoping to retain some of BCN's morning audience... ???

Remember, WFAN in New York thrived for years with Don Imus in the morning...
