TNN is Back! 4.2 Now Flagship for Nashville Morning Radio Show Rick 'n' Bubba??!

Well, the much awaited return of The Nashville Network launches tomorrow, Nov. 1, with WSMV's new 4.2 as flagship, now that Luken and Jim Owens have wrestled the branding away from MTV Networks and returned it home where it belongs. And like some broadcast outlets, they're bringing live radio to the airwaves to populate mornings. So to which legendary Nashville Morning Radio Show are they turning for their morning airwaves? Well, let's see... over at WSIX there's House... no he's gone... there's WSM-FM, KDF, or WSM-AM... no, not really enough there for TV... Woody & Jim... no they're on a rock station... there's a big morning show on the sports station... no sports are well-covered on TV... the Christian stations?... no, they're covered on TV in various versions.

So where can we find a morning radio show to bring to television? In that Nashville suburb of Birmingham, of course. Rick 'n' Bubba! They're on a country station and they've even had their radio show on TV before!

SO SAD THERE"S NO REALLY ENTERTAINING SHOW ON NASHVILLE MORNING RADIO THAT CAN REPRESENT NASHVILLE!!!!!! Really says something about the state of country radio in this city.

It's not the state of Country Radio in this city, it's the state of radio in general in this city and other cities.

As far as Rick 'n' Bubba, they may be on Country station in Birmingham, but when they were the air in Nashville, they were on a Top 40 station for a while, a Hot AC station, a Rock Station, a country station, a Sports Talk station and a News Talk station before they left the Nashville airways. And in Knoxville, they are on a Christian station (afternoon drive). So I wouldn't say they are strictly on Country formats.

Huh? You make like this is a programming decision, and not a business decision.

There are lots of live morning country radio shows in Nashville. This is a business decision, made about money and business, not quality of programming. This new TNN is being done on the cheap. This says more about this new TNN than it does about the "state of radio in general."

Oh, c'mom, Big A, give me my rant! Can't a guy capitalize on a TV event to comment on the wain of entertaining local radio morning shows without getting fact-checked? Of course it's a business decision! And a good one at that -- I'm actually glad R & B will be able to be heard on Nashville airwaves again (it's the being able to be seen part that is disturbing). And no one expects digital side channels to be anything other than cheap. Looks like i'm guilty of not using smilies again.

Yes, w9wi, I did mention Luken didn't I? "Flagship" is their word, although I realize in the older days of radio "flagship" referred to the originator more than just "home base" as it does today (we've already had that conversation on this board haven't we?). Anyway, sure would be nice if 4.3 could be the home of Luken's RTV in Nashville.

OK, so Gerry House has retired. What else? I doubt very much that Gerry would have allowed his radio show to be put on TV.

that's a very accurate observation...I also don't believe it would have happened. ever.

Remember the Don Imus morning radio show live on MSNBC? Wasn't all that bad.

TV folks so often lean on the video to tell the story. Radio has to use words. Get a true news radio show on during morning drive on tv and it's really informative. I know a lot of people turn the tv on during the morning getting ready but I'm not sure how many WATCH it vs just listen to it...and a lot of the morning content feels like fun and fluff on tv...a solid focused radio show would be a welcome alternative to everybody being basically the same thing.

I'm suprised they would not be using syndicated guys big d and bubba since they are still in Nashville syndicating to 50 stations and were on wsix before

Just to be clear about it, while WSMV is carrying the new TNN, we are NOT the point of origin.

Apparently people assumed flagship was origin
The Nashville Network (TNN) today announced its flagship affiliate in Nashville, Tennessee (DMA 29).

However it is I'm guessing coming out of Chattanooga?

Yes, it comes out of Chattanooga. At least, most of it -- you will see Nashville-based weather cutins, and we've been rerunning the 6:00 4.1 newscast at 9 on 4.2.

TNN's original name, The Nashville Network, brought with it an immediate perception of what the network was, and based on ratings it's strength ended up mostly in the SE with many cable systems never giving it a shot.
I hope this rebirth comes with success but am not clear if WSMV and other local stations that pick it up, will be selling it aggressively. The whole "digitial revolution" the FCC came up with has turned into lifeless hype.

Local tv stations coast to coast with additional channels of programming opportunities for free to over the air subscribers who might not want to subscribe to cable or satellite services, has not been all that beneficial it seems.

While WTVF has a fully programmed local channel that was before all this called the Plus, most stations resorted to stuff like old tv reruns on ME-TV, MGM movies on This TV, Urban programming on Bounce tv, and it comes off as filler programming and not promoted, marketed or showing results really.

I believe TNN on WSMV 4.2 replaces a Spanish effort that didn't go well. I'd love to believe this channel be worth watching and pick up audience and revenue, but so many tv stations these days seem so overwhelmed trying to kept up with cable competition, that these "dot" anythings just sit there, come in with little or no cost to the station, and get minimal effort to "serve the public interest as a public trustee" like the cliche of the FCC licenses has turned out to be.

I agree. It's in the same category of HD Radio. The theory is that the public wants more content, but there really isn't any demand for more content. NBC Universal is probably the most involved in these sub-channels, providing lots of original programming from O&O stations to affiliates to fill the time. In the same way, several radio companies, including NPR, offered radio content for HD Radio channels. The result is that the public is inundated with content, so they don't care. Content isn't enough to attract new audiences to digital services. They're satsified paying $100 a month for cable.

The bad news about this new TNN is that it's mainly re-runs from the 80s and 90s. The fact is that TNN was a huge success because it was the MTV for country, and it did it at a time when there was a lot of excitement for cable channels. It was launched around the same time as CNN and several other major channels, and the partnership with Group W made them a must-carry well beyond the Southeast. If another original country cable channel was launched today, it would be a struggle. GAC is experiencing some problems, and they're probably the biggest heir to the TNN heritage. So I don't have a lot of hope for this new TNN.

I saw part of "Rick and Bubba' this morning. What is supposed to be its target audience?

Is that's a great question.

Two good ole boys ramblin' about first one thing then another. It's baffling how they end up on stations they don't fit one iota. Several years ago they were on Sunday afternoons on WSB AM Atlanta. Made no sense whatsoever. Turned out to be a corporate thing. As part of their renewal with a then Cox owned radio station in Birmingham, in order to hype and extend their "network" Cox agreed to put them on in Atlanta two other markets..Jacksonville and Charlotte I think.

The PD's didn't ask for them...it was just weekend filler cause "corporate said so."
But in a world of people meters and efficiency in verbal skills, it's interesting they can talk for the longest time with no point or conclusion to a thought. They either answer to no PD, don't have a strong PD, don't listen to a PD, don't care about the PD, or all of radio is wrong and they're the brightest idea on radio today. TV? Sounds more like an ego trip. Like 2 guys in Alabama being able to say "we were on WSB in Atlanta for a while."
