To THE CHAIN GANG.... I've got one.... What should I do with what I've got?

Have a Optimod 9100 up at the AM tower feeding off the Marti... Heil Mic's into the board... No processing from Mic to Board, or board to Marti send.... I have an old Sound Tech gate limiter:leveler:compressor available to me and have considered dbx 286's for the mics and if I can afford it the ART tubed compressor limiter to level things together before going to the Marti and on to the tower.... What do you think... Love to hear it... I want clean crisp punchy AM that we grew up to.... "Skip"

Tell henry to buy a compellor or use Breakaway audios low delay proccesor to feed the stl.

Yes on the dbx286A's. DBX has built a lot of stuff with a sloppy attack time (I think they call it True RMS processing). The 286A doesn't suffer from that...amazing sound for the money.

Rob Calhoun and I were talking.. I just want to get some dbx286's or old Symetrix for the two main mics (Heil) in the control room.. Rob like ART's two channel tubed compressor... I have an old Sound Tech limiter, compressor, gate sitting in the Way-Fm translator box here waiting for me to pick up.. If anyone knows of any place I can get some used dbx's or Symetrix (and not on EBAY, I have trouble getting to the bid wars), let me know.. I doubt if there is any used ART tubed stuff.. I want to get stereo in case I add a FM translator in the futrue and start streaming up to the tower and then use the Marti as a remote send from the van (just got lettered today)....I will have to get a smaller Yaggi for the van pole and a whip for to replace the dish at the tower...But that would sound great and then have enough T-1 to send it back to the studio 1.2 miles west... Two channels up and one back...... Another question: Does BSI have a remote start capability from a touchtone (like other automation) so I can be board op-less during a ballgame or remote way out of the Marti range????? Thanks for the help gang.. New owner.. Wanting to maximize "The Duck".....

I am real happy with the ART compressor, AND with Breakaway. I use both, and can't believe the bang for the buck those two paired gives.

BSI can take any closure. Some of the Marti units have a subaudible tone that provides a closure.

Another option is 3g to run the computer from the game site, also using it to send audio.

Use touch tones. Buy a decoder with built in relay for the closures.

Look at the breakaway for $300 and put it on it's own computer. Backup ups too. Little delay.

Best bet for remote operation these days is to use a broadband wireless card and just VNC into your BSI machine at the studio and control it over the VNC. You will want to take some security steps, such as running a VPN back to the studio from your laptop.

Only disadvantage is that if you lose your broadband, you lose control.

We use a Sine Systems DAI-1 to do unattended sports remotes. Contact closures to the automation can stop the music, play an open/close for the game, and start and stop a spot rotation. We also use a relay to switch the audio feed to select the Marti receiver or the Sine phone hybrid output. On Marti remotes, the phone connection provides cueback from the station as well as a fallback path for the remote in case the Marti link is lost.

Got the BSI DR-10 at a lower price than the other units and it was built for the Semian..... I will see what I need to make it operational.... So, I have the toys (maybe a used reverb would cinch it)...Symetrix 422 and the dbx266xl for mics and the Optimod 9100 is already in place at the transmitter.... Now, to find boxes and pack all next week...... Plan to move starting a week from Monday.... Everything is "Ducky"....Think I found a cooler wearing mascot outfit for under $500... This is fun....

Bought a Behringer Digital Reverb.. Should I put it in front of the Symetrix AGC or behind the AGC and in front of the Marti? "Skip" seeks!...

If you put the verb early in the chain the rest of the processing will emphasize the effect. Placing the verb further down the line will act as a spice. So it is a matter of what floats your boat. Also, I haven't used a Behringer reverb but some of the low cost reverbs operate better as a side chain instead of a direct insert.

Rob... Thanks.. I think "Spice" is what I remember with the sound of WLS and WGBF (AM's with the verb on the whole enchalada).. Where, if I read you right, on the front it will get 'enhanced' with more of a WABC sound.....

My audio out of Breakaway (or microphone) splits. One path gets passed through the ART VLA leveler, the other path goes through the Hammond reverb spring, then to the modulator. I did not like the result of sending reverb through compression. For me, it was then too much "up front',
regardless of how I tried to lower it in the mix. I feed main audio and reverb separately into the modulator into 2 different inputs.

I am shooting for the sound of WLS and WCFL, not WABC.

we had an old TAPCO reverb on WCSI in Columbus. As I recall it was last in the chain to allow the level to be set without being pumped by compression.

I always liked at least once a shift during the news to "tap" the reverb to hear the spring.

For what it was, that ole Tapco sounded good...definitely gave you that bigger than life sound in the headphones. I remember the first day the PD spoke into the mic...he stopped in mid sentence, had a pleased look on his face & then carried on.

BALDY WAS PLEASED???????

WOW!

How often did that happen?

Chief.. I remember the Tapco at WVJC during the Rick Ammon days.... I think Frank Purcell took it out to sound dull-AC in 1980.....

Good memories.. Now in a Columbia hotel...Move into the condo tomorrow and store stuff at the station.....Will play at the station Thursday thru Saturday and kick off with Casey's Classic AT-40/The 70's...12 noon CT...

After any AGC. Just before final peak limiting, if possible.

Kind Regards,
David

David..

That's where I will put it... I have a space on the splitter of wires (one stereo set goes mono to the marti for this AM and the other goes into the 'StreamOn' box...Those Canadian guys have a good streaming set up.....).... They sent my 'verb' to the old address, so I will pick it up when back in the homeland (3.2 hours north of me)......
