Yes sir we are on the same page, you are 100 % correct.....There is a series of albums produced in the early seventies, that featured shows from the top market radio stations accross the country with their top DJ's . Priceless shows with tons of personality, I remember locally all our stations had tons of personality 24/7 and I loved It. Unfortunetly most stations today outside of the top 20 markets have only one such DJ...and I can't hear him 24/7. but 86% on my comments are aimed at the limited format of oldies Radio and not at the DJ's.
There is not much personalty to be had out there my friend.

Everyone has valid points...I just hate to see this beloved format disappear or not even try and fix itself, because other alternatives that have been stated here, are not just looming anymore, they are knocking at
the door.

PS: are you still wearing that leather jacket and what happened to potsie...i wish I had used that name before you, doggone it.

There is not much personalty to be had out there my friend.

Try satellite radio. The '50s channel has Alex Ward's Pink & Black Days, Bruce Berenson's Rockabiilly Road Trip, Norm N. Nite, and Cool Bobby B's Doo Wop Stop. The '60s channel has Cousin Brucie and reruns of Wolfman Jack. It doesn't get much better than that. It keeps ME busy...............but then, I don't listen to radio 24/7.

yes you are right, all of those are very entertaining, I've heard them all...and some canned shows on local commercial radio.....I was addressing the average local stations accross the usa, in general.

Cousin Brucie is good, but all in all XM had better personalities on the 50s & 60s channels before the merger.

Playing music that 99.99999% of the audience doesn't remember and doesn't like doesn't "fix" the format. As for me personally, I am not going to pretend that I like every song that ever charted from 1955 to 1975 because I didn't then and I don't know. I guess even many of my "oh wows" were hits in other formats, such as R&B. Yes I could hear Tom Jones and Frank Sinatra mixed with the Rolling Stones and Smokey Robinson back in the day, but I will tell you I couldn't have cared less about Sinatra and Jones back then, i would just politely sit through it until something I liked came on.

I don't think we're advocating that they play 99% of stuff that the audience doesn't remember. Actually their play list was better before the merger. Just broadening it back to that would be fine instead of narrowing it down like every other oldies station.

I believe Fonz was referring to what we guys found cool back in the day, i.e., black loafers, pegged black pants, short-sleeved pink shirts with black saddle stitching on the sleeves and pocket. The belt was worn with the buckle pulled around to over the pelvis bone, not in the back.

Pink and grey was for the poodle skirts along with the pony tails, bobby socks and saddle shoes.

I lived in the deep south in 1955/56, Florida and Mississipi. It was black and pink there during those years. And yes, belts were very thin, I had one which was perhaps 3/8” (max) in width. Thanks for the recall, the “belt in the back”, now I know what you meant. I was in NM 57/58 and I recall the “belt in back” being mot popular mainly on college campus – Ivy league as you stated.

Poodle skirts were usually for dress up or special occasions, like the sock hop. Multiple petticoats were daily fashion, however. The girls were not allowed to wear levi pants, pedal-pushers, or toreadors to school except on State Fair day and Sadie Hawkins week. The rest of the year it was skirts only, all the time.

NM girls favor the poni-tail - it keeps their hair out of their face when they're pole-bending, barrel racing or goat roping (chuckle).

I think it is heading that way anyway. I listen to my Ipod more than I listen to XM and I never listen to commercial radio anymore. If you can call up a favorite song from you Ipod with just a voice command, wny would anyone listen to radio anymore...Technology is amazing. Who would have guessed just a few years ago that is would be possible? I wonder what is next?
