Longtime WPLG Channel 10 anchor Todd Tongen has died.
The 30-year veteran of the South Florida ABC affiliate was found dead Monday morning, according to WPLG. He was 56.
The Pembroke Park station said Tongen’s wife was “out of town and unable to reach him, so she asked a friend to check on him.”
Police were called and they found him, the station reported. A cause of death is not immediately known.
Tongen, who anchored weekend mornings with Neki Mohan and reported during the week, was known for his humor and warm personality.
“He was a favorite among our viewers for his quick wit, his honesty, his sense of humor,” political reporter Michael Putney said during a broadcast Monday. “He was so funny. Viewers loved him and so did we.”
The native of Minnesota began his TV career in Grand Junction, Colorado, and then worked as a feature reporter and weatherman at KARK-TV Little Rock, Arkansas, before landing at WPLG in 1989.
At the station, Tongen was an-all purpose broadcaster. He was a weatherman and a reporter who could deliver a hard news story as well as a fun feature.
