Tokyo has no 'Plan B' for Games despite coronavirus (Note this affects NBC Sports)

The medical talking heads are continuing to say that the virus will abate with the coming warmer weather - similar to what the flu bug does every year.

Then those of us in “the desert” in places like Phoenix and Palm Springs where today’s weather is like Summer in Minnesota should be safer?

i don’t include Las Vegas since there ar so many transients, which makes it worse, not better.

the real problem is that the talking heads are all reading from different scripts.

I have had countless heads comparing the Coronavirus to the common flu, except that it seems to be more contagious and it doesn't always show symptoms as soon as the common flu does. It also doesn't seem to be as deadly.

And they don't have a vaccine or any cure. That's kind of a problem for sick or elderly people.

True. Anyone with a compromised immune system is at higher risk. I think I heard earlier today that very few youngsters (10-under) have died from Coronavirus whereas many more die each year from the flu.

My opinion (not an educated one) is this is a new virus and we lack some immunity to it. As a result, it can affect almost anyone. While I don't feel it is any more dangerous than common strains of influenza, the biggest risk is the economy rather than the human toll. With little or no resistance to the virus it can cause so many to be ill at any given time, the economy and availability of workers and products will be affected. Warm weather is certainly an enemy to influenza viruses, so perhaps this will lessen any impact. To listen to media, the end of the world is likely next week or next month. Me, I'm not that concerned.

Update NBC view on how they are watching the proposed schedule of the 2020 summer Olympics.

Comcast chairman-CEO Brian Roberts expressed cautious optimism that the summer Olympics in Tokyo will proceed as scheduled despite growing fears that the coronavirus outbreak could force a postponement to the games set for July 24-Aug. 9.

“What I know is it’s full-steam ahead,” Roberts said Tuesday in a Q&A with analyst Ben Swinburne at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom conference in San Francisco. “I’m optimistic Olympics are going to happen. I’m looking forward to being there.”

NBCUniversal is heavily invested in Olympics rights through the 2032 games. If the Tokyo games are postponed, NBCU has insurance to mitigate the losses for the company, Roberts said.

Except by even conservative estimates, it's 10x more deadly than the flu. 80% of cases are very minor, but up to 20% of cases require hospitalization, so a widespread outbreak could quickly overwhelm the hospital system.

I think the potential for mass outbreak and overwhelming the hospital system makes this more dangerous, and may be leading to a higher death rate since it is a virus that primarily affects the lungs. But the reaction and panic will likely be worse than the actual virus, for most people. (Think product shortages, supply chain disruptions, economic impacts such as events being cancelled, etc)

Update NBC view on how they are watching the proposed schedule of the 2020 summer Olympics.

Right now, like MLB, Nippon Professional Baseball (Japan's equivalent) is in the middle of its exhibition schedule. I ran across a Seibu Lions game on YouTube and noticed that it was being played in an empty stadium. Turns out that all games are being played with no fans present. It will be interesting to see if the regular season opens in a couple of weeks and the ban on spectators is still in effect. Could that be an Olympics option, too, or is the live gate too important a part of the revenue picture?

FIBA (The international Basketball league) just released a game as scheduled but with a half filled stadium due to COVID-19 precautions.

Hmmmm, why were ANY fans let in? What sort of precautions prohibited the admission of the people who weren't allowed in? The game took place in Turkey and from the flags being waved it looks like the fans who got on camera were all Turkish? So maybe no traveling fans of the visiting club were allowed to attend? I'm just not seeing how a half-empty arena is any kind of "precaution." BTW, FIBA is now streaming live a game from Romania. The visiting team is from Germany, and the lower bowl of the arena is packed but no one is in the upper seating level. Precautions or just poor ticket sales? Same question goes for the Turkish game.

...again, no Olympic 'Plan B' (yet).

Saw a story just a day or two ago - the venues are completed.

Now, there may NOT be anyone watching them live, but the event will happen.

Really all the IOC can do is watch how other sports leagues like FIBA, NBA, NHL, MLB and Japanese Baseball Leagues are handling the COVID-19 fallout though as of this time.
