Tonight Show Anniversary Specials get rare re-run airing in L.A. on 2/23

KDOC-TV will show the 17th Anniversary Special from 1979 (the first of the prime-time shows I believe) this upcoming Friday night 2/23 at 8pm. The 20th Anniversary Special from 1982 will follow at 10pm that same night. For whatever reason, these are the only two annual Tonight Show prime-time specials that Sony Television has the rights to. It's really a shame they don't get together with the Carson estate to secure the rights to the other 11 specials, or better yet, and new "Best of Jonhhy Carson" series. It would do really well I think.

I'd watch a Carson rerun any day! I'd rather see classic Carson shows than anything new from Leno. One of the cable networks (possibly A&E) was running all the original Dick Cavett shows not too long ago. I'd much rather see them do this with Johnny.

It's sad that most pre-1970's Carson footage is lost and gone forever. But that's true of so much vintage TV -- either live and never recorded, or taped and then erased, or kinescoped and ended up in a landfill somewhere. No one back then dreamed that historians and sociologists (not to mention us plain old fans) would have any interest in a topical talk/variety show after it was broadcast.

...actually, the Cavett repeats (and a couple of originals -- doesn't that set a record of sorts for Cavett hosting talk programs in five consecutive decades?) were on Turner Classic Movies; ten years ago VH1 used some of Cavett's shows with John & Yoko, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and some of the acts that were at Woodstock. Merv Griffin apparently owns his Metromedia (post-CBS) programs; I'd be interested in seeing a few of those as well...

Cavett's show was great, because as he was viewed as more "highbrow" than his competition, he managed to snag interviews with people who rarely granted them (like Hitchcock, Hepburn, etc.). As a Marx Brothers fan, I'm grateful for his shows with Groucho -- it gave us a last glance at a relatively lucid man before he sadly started to really head into senility.

Cavett more "highbrow" than Carson? Not as far as I'm concerned. Carson was as highbrow as they came, very classy, while still managing to be funny and very entertaining. It's no wonder his "Tonight Show" lasted almost 30 consecutive years, and it only changed because HE decided to leave. Sadly, they do NOT make 'em like Johnny anymore.

What about Merv's Group W shows, do they still exist?
