Tony Bennett, masterful stylist of American musical standards, dies at 96

It's interesting that just a few years ago Tony Bennett traveled to Mexico to meet the great Vicente Fernandez. It seems that they both were members of a little "mutual admiration society". Tony told friends that he had always wanted to meet him. It was fortunate for both of them that this took place when it did, because as not long ago we lost Vicente Fernandez as well.
 
This week's Billboard magazine has a quote from their review of his first hit song "Because of You" in 1951.

"adequate ... with nothing special to offer."

Later in the article they have much higher praise for his later work.
