It does, but there are several successful Classic Hits stations that advertise that they play nearly exclusively 80s music. WQOL in Vero Beach is example. WOCL in Orlando is another one.

I'm sure there are a handful of examples where the emphasis is on 80's music, but in places where demographic spread is important from a sales perspective, focusing a format where the average listener is close to 50? Something like that isn't a good long term strategy.
Even if a station is running three decades worth of music, it's easy to pivot and promote you play more 90's music.
Perhaps you are right, but there are countless markets in which mostly-80s stations are not only present, but they are succeeding. A couple of more examples are WOGL/Philadelphia and WROR/Boston.
I wouldn't go so far to say they aren't currently successful. Especially in smaller markets. Formats are expensive propositions to change. Painting yourself into a demographic corner as your audience ages-out is not a good long term business model. That's a big reason why the generic-termed format Classic Hits came about. Allows for some promotional wiggle room as your audience changes.
My only point is that the 80s format eventually succeeded. I’m not disputing anything else you’re saying.
It’s amazing how WRMF does the 2000’s through today and their ratings are off the chain. Oh I know why, they aren’t IHeart owned that’s why. This station needs to be put down. How many times can you spin the format wheel and get the same crappy results. Truly sad.
It helps that WRMF has the KVJ Show.
iHeart usually does well with pop formats. But they haven't found luck in Miami, as of yet.
My guess is that a big chunk of WRMF’s recent success has to do with the wildly popular KVJ Show. I find WRMF’s tight playlist to be boring, and I generally tune in only to listen to KVJ.
The station is #1 in all important demos in mornings, middays and afternoons. The morning show has, for example, the same share in 18-34 as the afternoon show. However, in 35-64, the morning show has double that of the afternoon show. Mornings outperforms slightly, but the whole station does well and overall is #1 in 12+, 18-34, 18-49, 25-49, 35-54, 35-44 and 35-64.
Mornings are strong, but the programming the rest of the day and week sustains the station... this is not a Howard Stern type of situation where the station is way below the morning numbers the rest of the day.
I cannot deny helping WRMF's ratings success in the mornings because I've been a faithful loyal listener of The KVJ Show since 2014. I wouldn't listen to anything else.

I have been listening to KVJ since before Jason was part of the team (since the Wild 95.5 days). They have managed to keep the show fresh, interesting, and on point for over 20 years. They are also incredibly involved in the community and do some great charity work.

I lived in WPB when they inaugurated Jason to the show. I was at the club taking pics for them lol. All the comments on my post, I agree with. WRMF does very well and yes they are repetitive but they are doing something right always way ahead of IHeart’s voice tracked Wild 955.
And when it comes to past ownership since KVJ arrived to WRMF in 2014, the show has been barely untouchable by its owners. Its owners have let them be widely free most of the time.
Wild, as a straight up CHR, is less musically boring than WRMF. But Wild is nearly 100% voice-tracked. I remember when Kevin and Virginia started at Wild. I want to say it was 2000 or very early 2001. I have some recordings of them from February 2001 on audio tape. Nonetheless, when they started, Wild hadn't been back to CHR for even 3 years. It's fair to say that they really helped to build (or re-build) the format on WLDI - especially after three disastrous years as different Country incarnations.
They started in 1999. Also, do you seriously have those recordings? I wanna listen to them!
I think so. I can get their signal just fine. As a matter of fact, I can get their HD signal here.
A lot of Audacy stations like to use “Nobody Plays More ‘80s” as a positioner. However, they generally “pad” the playlist with 3 sometimes 4 90s or 70s songs every hour to break up the monotony and give them some leeway. So they are mostly 80s, but they aren’t boxing themselves in to that decade completely.
