Tough Times In Sports Talk Radio

I suspected things might be tough for WGR when the NHL locked out the players and subsequently canceled the season, but good gawd, I never thought it would get this bad.

Howard Simon, a sports guy who's almost universally regarded as one of the brightest and best, talking about "Movies That Make Guys Cry."

WTF, guys?!

If that's not enough, we're treated to the incessantly self-serving Jeremy White yapping about himself and his favorites. But I guess there should be no surprise, as we've come to expect this from the Newhouse grad. It is, afterall, all about Jeremy on the morning show.

There are times that I feel sorry for Howard. What has he done to be saddled with a guy who makes Kevin Sylvester or any one of the previoush morning show hoshts shound nearly as erudite as John Otto.

OK. That's a stretch, but you get the point.

With topics like this, you can't help wonder if Bauerle is moonlighting as executive producer for WGR and selecting the topics for Howard & Jer-ah-me-me-me. We'll know this is the case if Howard's topic is "should I have my cat
de-clawed?"

Don't laugh. I mean, really, did you ever expect "movies that make men cry?" Maybe they hi-jacked the topic from Janet & Shimmelpennick down the hall.

Surprised one of the regulars didn't call in to say he finds himself sobbing uncontrollaby whenever he watches the scene in "Raging Bull" where good ol' Jake is having his face beaten to the texture of an Arby's roast beef sandwich... the scene where it looks like his left eye is going to spring from his face like a cork from a freshly shaken bottle of sparkling wine.

"Movies that make guys cry," eh?

Another good reason for the NHL and the players union to put aside their
differences and come correct.

To bad "Coach" is gone!! It would have been great to hear him do a segement on "(BLEEP) Eye For The Straight Guy"!! Cant you just hear him now!!

PS: for those of you a little limited in the head that was a joke...
Edited by majicrockstar on 06/02/05 01:05 PM.

Here's an idea...

Maybe they should team Jer-ah-me-me-me "Newhouse" White up with Mike "Mensa" Schopp, and put Bulldog on with Howard in the morning. That way, they could talk SPORTS in the morning, and expound eruditiously on a plethora of topics in the afternoon.

Re: Here's an idea...

OR how about "When SPORTS news breaks out, we break in" WGR sports radio 55.
______________
"If you never say NO, How much is your YES worth?"

Is this the first time you've noticed WGR doing "off sports topics" shows? Last week they did "favorite foods." C'mon, this is sports talk radio! This is what guys in bars talk about when they're not reading Maxim, Penthouse, S-I, The Sporting News or checking out the hot babes in a bar(all of whom just can't wait to hook up with guys who listen to WGR.)

It's not that Jer-ah-me-me-me (I think you created a nickname) White is all that bad, it's just that he has no sense of timing with Howard. If Mr. 'CuseGrad is a sidekick, then he shouldn't be interrupting unless Howard calls on him. If he wants to be center stage, fine, then he should be given his own show. I kind of like Roxy's idea of putting him on with MensaMan in the afternoon. The show could be called Dueling SAT's.

As to Dickerson. Spare me. The only thing bigger than that guy's arss was his self-serving ego. Yeah, maybe they could run one of his great interviews... like the pandering POS he did with unconvicted former Buffalo Bill and member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

BTW, it's not likely that Bauerle is picking the show topics. More likely, it's Greg Greed. He is, afterall, the PD.

When Howard was first named as morning show host, I was hoping he would do it solo, like he did on WNSA. Of course, that would be a much greater challenge because he would have no one to bounce comments off of. I was disappointed when Jeremy White joined Howard on that first show. Now, I'm kinda used to it. In fact, I do enjoy the "on trial" feature, which Howard, obviously, couldn't do alone.

As it happens, I only listen to WGR during the 9:00 hour. And I must admit that I've rarely heard an interview guest during that hour. Interviews with guests were the strength of Howard's show on WNSA. He always had someone to talk with. Perhaps that's happening earlier in the show on WGR. But since I don't listen then, I can't comment.

To have quality guests on, you need a quality producer like Doug Young and his impressive roladex. WGR obviously doesn't have someone of that stature. So, we're left with "movies that make guys cry." Perhaps someone like Doug could keep the show on a sports track, even when there isn't much going on, like now.

If I were king at Entercom, I would reach out to Doug Young, apologize for firing him and bring him back. His presence as a producer would not only benefit WGR but WBEN as well. No one ever produced a morning show like Doug Young did. Let Jeremy just do sports and let Howard be Howard by doing the show we used to hear on WNSA.

One is led to believe certain people who used to return calls made from Indian Church Road, won't do the same for Corporate Parkway. Sad, if true.
