Travesity in St. Louis, points to ever expanding greed in sports!!!

It's been awhile since I've posted a rant, but I'm ready to raise a ruckus. So here goes:

Just in case you haven't heard the news, the St. Louis Cardinals baseball games will not be on KMOX-1120 AM next year. Yep, you heard right. The Cardinal ownership bought a 50% share of KTRS-550 AM in St. Louis and the games will be carried on that station. CBS/Infinity broadcasting, the KMOX owner, reportedly walked away from the bargaining table when the rights fees got too high and obviously they were not going to let go of 50% of KMOX to some baseball team owner. This marks a sad day for many Cardinal fans in the midwest and south who have listened to the Cardinal games on KMOX for many years, myself included. In fact, I was listening to one just this past weekend. KTRS, while considered the 2nd best AM signal in the market, simply cannot match the mighty 50,000 watt clear-channel KMOX. KMOX has been THE number 1 station in St. Louis for as long as I can remember, many times having twice or even 3 times the ratings of it's nearest FM competitor. The reason? KMOX has a tie with that community that is probably not duplicated I dare say anywhere else in the country. When people say St. Louis, usually one of these three things come to mind: 1. The Cardinals 2. The arch 3. KMOX Radio

What this all boils down to is money. KMOX senior management I'm sure just could not justify the huge amounts of money that the Cardinals were demanding. I think the new ownership there doesn't quite realize the magnatude of the decision they've made. While some on the Missouri board have been popping off about getting the Cards on satellite radio next year and to get over it, I say buzz off. The Cardinals would not be as strong an orgainzation as they are today without the coverage provided by KMOX over the years. THAT STATION has provided the team with a fan base and loyalty that spread far away from St. Louis and across the middle part of the country. Just think of how many people have listened to the Cardinals at night on KMOX over the years. Sitting on the back porch, walking the dog or while trying to go to bed. The team should have been paying the station money not the other way around!!! This will weaken team support over the long haul I predict. While some will blame CBS/Infinity for this, I understand that it was a business decision and I don't blame them. Mr. DeWitt and the ownership are the ones to blame. Greed - plain and simple!! If the orgainzation was on the brink of bankruptcy, I'd be a little more understanding. But the Cardinals are making plently of money right now.

Many people fuss about the costs of cable t.v. and satellite steadily on the rise. Having once worked in the cable t.v. business, I can say that the main reason for this is programming costs and especially costs for ESPN and other sports networks, who each year pass down large rate increases to operators, who in turn, have no choice but to pass those costs on to consumers. The reason ESPN has gotten so pricey is that baseball (and other professional sports) carraige rights/fees have gotten so high because of outlandish player salaries. See, it's all going into the players/owners hip pockets. They care nothing about us peion fans.

I'll end by saying that I'm pretty much thru with watching/supporting professional sports. My interest has been waning in recent years anyway. While this move won't be the nail in the coffin for the Cards, it definately will hurt and support from outside the St. Louis area will drop off quite a bit.

I have to agree somewhat...a bit of nostalgia here....I was one of those that used to listen to Cards baseball on KMOX as I swatted them damn East Arkansas mosquitoes. I have great memories of my dad and me sitting in the living room listening to the Redbirds. August Busch is probably turning over in his grave.

I posted this on the Missouri board and also sent copies to a good friend who is close to the decision making process. Let me preface this by saying that my love of Saint Louis Cardinal baseball has sometimes been termed as "obsessive", "extravagant", and "unnecessary" by some people, namely my last ex-girlfriend..... The last Cardinal game I went to was well.... last weekend..

Okay, here goes:

This message going out to the Saint Louis Cardinals organization....

You people have no idea what you have done for sports fans like me who have slept every night since I was old enough to understand with a walkman tuned in to KMOX. I am from Russellville, Arkansas which is a town where there is no decent Cardinals affiliate to serve the area at night. That has never been a concern because I would be able to tune in Radio 1120 at night and hear everything crystal clear. But because the powers that be only care about the almighty dollar, they choose KTRS, which I have problems picking up at Six Flags Over STL at night.

You guys have abandoned your fans and will ultimately hurt the program. Most people out in the boon docks who don't have an affiliate are not going to pay to listen to the radio... It's too early in the game for that. And now that you've built a brand new stadium that doesn't seat as many people, there are a lot of fans who may just totally give up interest. I'll take my tickets to the Braves series this weekend, and I'll continue to watch proudly. But as I was telling a source very close to the decision making process, "You dance with the one that brung ya...." Why fix something that is NOT broken.....

Jack Buck is probably still listening because I bet ya you can hear KMOX on the golden streets.... You can barely pick up KTRS in Saint Charles.... What kind of BS reasoning is that? This decision sickens me... It doesn't matter what station carries it if you are sitting under the Arch, but unfortunately the Cards organization is failing to realize just how far beyond I-270 the Redbird Nation reaches. And that my friends can be TOTALLY credited to KMOX.... That station is the SOLE reason that we have such a broad fan base. So you go on ahead and cut your ties... Then we'll see who is bitching when merchandise sales go down because people in outerlying areas aren't buying.

I won't be listening to the games next year... not because I don't care. IT'S BECAUSE I CAN'T!!! YOU PEOPLE HAVE MADE IT THAT WAY!!! YOU'VE TAKEN AWAY A STAPLE OF MY LIFE THAT GOES BACK TO MY CHILDHOOD. My greatest memories have come from sitting around be it on the back porch or in the car listening to Jack and Mike. I freakin felt like I was there... I've been in that broadcast booth and watched... it is a powerful feeling to know where all the call of the game is going. But no more......

Maybe I am a little overzealous... Maybe I am taking this too personal. But folks, I am first and foremost a CARDINALS FAN who wants the best for this organization. And I am a CARDINALS FAN solely because I could hear the games growing up on KMOX.

You haven't just shot yourself in the foot.... You just blew it off with a 12 guage. Hope you are happy because our fan base will be walking with a severe limp.

I'm not much a traditionalist when it comes to radio... but baseball.. baseball! The pursuit of baseball is not at all rational. It's all about tradition.

I am a resident of Atlanta and a long-time Braves fan but I have been telling friends recently that if it's not going to be the Braves in the World Series, let it be the Cardinals! I just admire the team, the city's fans and of course La Russa.

If this is how the team owners think, I may have to rethink this.

This is damaging to the fans, but it will be more damaging to the team and its owners. <P ID="signature">______________
