Tribune To Clear NFL Network Games Late In 2010 Season

The NFL Network has granted broadcast rights to Tribune Broadcasting to air six games in November and December, involving eight teams with a Tribune-owned station, in their home markets.

These games include the Bengals/Jets game which will air on WPIX/New York on Thanksgiving night, as well as the Cowboys/Cardinals game on KDAF/Dallas on Christmas.

So what do you think this means? Footballs isn't as popular as it once was? NFL outpriced itself for awhile and now needs a correction? Too much product? Cable isn't what it used to be?

Hmmm?

This is actually business as usual, as the NFL mandates local broadcast stations in teams' markets simulcast games televised by ESPN and NFL Network. This is regardless of the fact that ESPN is widely available in most homes (NFL Network, not so much). Of course, this transaction comes as a coincidence, in that eight of the twelve teams involved in the games NFL Network is carrying have Tribune-operated broadcast stations in their markets.
