Tribune's Randy Michaels releases memo with the "Forbidden 119"

There's a news tease for the Fox Report during the Beck show. The news anchor leads Brett Bair (sp) with "HEY BRETT" to which he answers "HEY (whomever)" "Hey"?

Maybe a bit heavy handed, though I can't disagree with the list. Whoever said "that murder made sense"?

Police are still looking for the head.

Some of the thoughts he had are valid. It's just the way he handles everything. Being of limited social skills or pleasing personality it's typical of Michaels to thunder in, make sure we know he's #1, and leave things all in an upheaval. He loves the drama and probably is thrilled it got talk. Now that he's made his thoughts clear, let's hope he focuses on the bigger picture as Tribune has enough problems waiting to be solved.

Just when you thought George Carlin had narrowed the list of words you couldn't say down to seven, Tribune CEO Randy Michaels has upped the count of forbidden words and phrases to 119.

Vocalo.org's Robert Feder has the whole story

RI's Tom Taylor describes "bingo cards" where employees at WGN can keep track of the transgressions of their fellow workers.

Randy "hey radio, remember me??" finds a way to get attention again. BFD....

This overly nitpicky practice by Michaels is just absurd. I always laughed at those over obsessive PD's that scrutinized every "the" and "of" said, while missing the big picture totally. God, I'm so glad, old farts like this, for the most part, are no longer programming most outlets. The only people who would possibly notice (or care) would be the very upper demos. Radio delivery and presentation has became much more conversational and less "stilted" over the past 20 to 30 years (something Michaels apparently has missed). Anyone under the age of 50 would laugh their *ss off at reading this silly list. How about worrying about the actual content and flow, instead of playing grammar police. And old school management like Michaels wonder why the 40 and under crowd have left radio and traditional broadcast outlets in droves. It's exactly this stilted, out of touch, lunacy. Trust me, banning common catch phrases isn't the answer to competing with ipods, the internet, satellite radio, and text messaging.

Sorry if this sounds a bit harsh. It's not meant to be, but it just strikes me as completely funny and a perfect example of how out of touch some "old media" types are with today's media world. (In a world ruled by abbreviated text messages, tweets, and facebook posts, this guy really thinks nitpicking on grammar is the answer to making radio relevant again ::) )

Sir, with respect this is a 50kw GIANT. Having lived in Chicago for over 30 years in the 50's thru the 70's, you may have little lidea what a landmark station wgn is.

You also have no idea about the nitpicky e-mals/calls/letters that are received when even a small grammatical error occurs.

He's just trying to keep wgn the greatest. Good work, Rndy.

You might recall that it was Michaels who took the stodgy, old-school WLW kicking and screaming into the modern age back in the 80s. So, what's the difference with taking an old-school WGN to somewhat less that senior citizen demographics?

"Was"... not "is." This is the station, that outside of baseball season, is around 22nd to 24th in 25-54, and barely inside the top 15 in baseball season. It's dead.

He's just trying to keep wgn the greatest. Good work, Rndy.

He's trying to resuscitate it. And it's not working, yet. Good luck.

Agree. It's become increasingly irrelevant. I also look for the decline in revenue to accelerate as well.

Yeah, and its terrible that old farts like Walt Disney hung around so long thinking they could make movies and shows for kids. Horrible.

And that ancient James Cameron, another ancient 56 year old like Michaels, should have quit making movies after Titanic. I mean, like, you know, how can he represent for people 30 years or more younger than he is?

It's time to watch a rerun of Soylent Green, in fact.

Ha! You guys have obviously NOT seen the revenue list for US radio.

WGN is in the top 10 in the United States. YOU should be so irrelevant...all the way to the bank!!!!

You perhaps missed the sidebar to the sale of the team... WGN's revenues and profits will be considerably impacted by the change in the relationship with the team.

And how long can a station that is not even in the top 20 in the sales demos continue to achieve those sales figures?

With all due respect, I have indeed seen the numbers. I've also seen numbers for revenue generated by other media. Granted for the here and now, WGN may still be one of the big cash cows in the business. What I'm referring to is the trend in revenue for WGN. It's declining. I know they have LOTS of company with that. But when you couple the revenue trend with the ratings trend...especially in the sales demos....my prediction is simply that the revenue decline will not only continue, but accelerate. Even as the rest of the industry recovers.

I have no dog in this fight. If Michaels and company can reverse the negative trends, great. More power to 'em. But as a media consumer as well as someone with 40 years experience in media sales and management, I have to say that I've not seen any evidence of what they've been doing is working.

I used the word "irrelevant" to describe what I see WGN radio becoming. For listeners and advertisers. I stand by that.

And it IS sad to see. They have a rich and proud heritage of being part of the fabric of the City and the Midwest. The trick to any turnaround will be in finding a way to restore that. I don't presume to know what the answer is. And I'm not saying the current team isn't up to the challenge. But given the core level of talent and professionalism of the WGN staff, I'd be comfortable in saying that IF the micromanagement and misguided focus reflected in the now infamous memo IS indeed an insight into management's attitude, I wouldn't look for any early fixes.
