Tropo is alive and well on the Gulf Coast (plus a bandscan from Orange Beach AL)

Tropo is in force now on the coast. I noticed the beginnings of it a few weeks ago. Tonight was an interesting night with two stations on dozens of frequencies. I took the car down to the car wash in Orange Beach and was able to experience one of the magical quirks of FM radio. While the mechanics of the autowash system were in front of the car, I got crystal clear reception of WWOZ out of New Orleans on 90.7. When it moved to the back of the car, it seamlessly switched to WKGC out of Panama City. Back, and forth. Forth, and back.

It was rather amusing. (I guess you had to be there.) :D

Here's what the band was like this evening. It's not unusual for to have these kinds of conditions many nights a week. My first ever bandscan post:

The only real mystery here is the AFR outlet on 106.9. There are a few translators around here that are a) off air, and b) relay another local religious outlet, but nothing points back to AFR. Very strange.

The AFR on 106.9 may have been some religious outfit that carries AFR at least part time.

That's my thought at the moment, too, but I'm drawing dead ends so far. We have a few translators within shouting distance licensed to 106.9 that are shown as having a local religious station as the parent, but none are on the air.

I'll keep investigating.
