Trump Moves To Have Final Say On All FCC Decision-Making

Today at DOJ, the president told the assembled staffers that CNN and MSNBC reporting should be illegal:

I've been getting too political lately (been watching the news too much!), so I'll just say this: Yesterday was a very, very, very bad day for broadcast media.

Well Trump got sued by the Associated Press over first amendment issues. Also they manage to continue to investigate Trump over his other lawsuit against Capital One. Plus Reuters the other news outlet that was banned from the White House covered Trump other lawsuit against Perkins Coie and others. All Trump did is get Spinco, WB, AP and Reuters to unite together and keep digging for more dirt on Trump and Musk in lawsuit papers.

Here is more the Associated Press, Reuters and Agence France-Presse are no longer with the VOA. Its all an extension why Reuters and AP were banned from the Oval office.

The government agency that runs the Voice of America has moved to terminate contracts with The Associated Press, Reuters and Agence France-Presse, and told its journalists Friday to stop using material from the wire services.

Kari Lake, the former broadcaster turned Republican politician who was selected by President Donald Trump to run VOA, estimated the move would save $53 million.

The new administration has quickly asserted its authority at VOA, which has delivered news from an American perspective to countries across the world. While awaiting official approval to take over, Lake was brought on as special adviser at the U.S. Agency for Global Media, which oversees VOA and sister organizations like Radio Free Europe.

She announced via social media on Thursday that she was ending the “expensive and unnecessary contracts” with the wire services.
“We should not be paying outside news organizations to tell us what the news is,” said Lake, who ran unsuccessfully for Arizona governor. “With a nearly billion-dollar budget, we should be producing news ourselves. And if that’s not possible, the American taxpayer should demand to know why.”

Under normal times yes, we are not in normal times anymore.
The court system would still knock down any attempt by Trump to make reporting on him 'illegal'. First, there is no law against reporting about a President. Secondly, for something to be 'illegal', there has to be a law to break. In this case, there is none. And any defamation civil suit would be problematic as well.

That assumes the court slaps him down. SCOTUS is a wild card.

Under normal times, yes.

However, as @Don CT pointed out, these are not normal times. That said, I wouldn't be so inclined to rely on the court system to stop things, for it appears this administration is willing to disobey any court orders it doesn't agree with.

It remains to be seen what SCOTUS will do and whether the administration will obey their rulings if they aren't favorable to Trump and Co, but I'm not holding my breath.

He'll "dissapear" reporters and dare anyone to do anything about it

We are, yet again, drifting VERY far from talking about radio here.

Comments and links that are specifically about what's happening at VOA are welcome.

If you just want to talk about politics in general, you have the entire rest of the Internet for that.
