Turner Classic Movies (TCM) Is Rebranding September 1

Check the logo at the end of this video.

Am I crazy or does that look like an old school Criterion logo?! Might they be merging the channel with The Criterion Collection?! Or at least giving programming and scheduling to them? They’re already in partnership with them on a myriad of titles they’ve licensed from them via HBO Max. And this would also allow Criterion to promote their awesome streaming service, The Criterion Channel, that much more.

So that’s my theory, and I think it’d be cool. But for all we know this could just be a simple new coat of paint and a rebrand to Classic Movie Channel, or something like that. But I’d love if the former was true, maybe Criterion Classics or even The Criterion Channel. I also suspect this is a continuation of WarnerMedia doing what they did a while back - excising the Turner aspect, as Turner as a legit corporate broadcast entity hasn’t existed for decades.

And they’ve already said in a Facebook reply, the channel will remain commercial-free.

Thoughts?

I am not sure. I find myself watching fewer TCM titles this past year. Sorry but I really don’t care about 1930’s movies with the exception of maybe three or four genuine classics. I am an upper demo, but even 30’s is too old for me. I prefer the 50’s through 70’s. I understand there are licensing restrictions but please widen your selections for those of us not dead yet.

In looking at the schedule for the week there doesn't look like any kind of change. Perhaps it will be a merger with Criterion, or it might just be a name or logo change. I'd like to see them make their Watch TCM app available without having to have a cable subscription, but then they may have to charge for it.

I assume it's just a logo change and not a rebranding of the network. They will be slowly removing Turner from all of the properties.

Wonderful. Not. A bunch of 70 year old movies. I understand some like these ancient movies but really could the channel do better? I think so.

At least they're actually showing "classic" movies. There for a while they were showing some movies from the mid-80s and even dabbling in the early 90s. Decent movies and perhaps popular for sure when they were first released, but I'd hardly consider them "classics".

i think this channel is dumping the Turner name as part of WarnerMedia/Discovery Networks merger and once Discovery fully takes over those networks after the merger is complete (as soon as AT&T finishes it's spin off of this company), as i can see the Turner Networks be phased out with all Turner networks move to the Discovery umbrella of the new company with TNT & TBS retaining their name since they are already established without mentioning it by the Turner name, and the sports coverage could be rebranded to Warner Sports with any sporting event that aired on the Discovery Network (like the 24 Hours of Le Mans be move away from Motor Trend for it to air on TNT, TBS and TruTV since they are established as the Turner Sports channels) to air on TNT, TBS and TruTV as the Warner Sports branded channels along with other Discovery or WarnerMedia networks not under the HBO umbrella airing sports on those networks.

Will has got a point.... they could keep the TBS and TNT names for the sheer recognition factor and it could no longer stand for anything....many may remember that TLC's original name was The Learning Channel, but nothing could be further from the truth today...in fact, I call it The Exploitation Channel.

Wow it's amazing that some of the movies on the list are now approaching 90 years old. Time flies by though.

The same can be said for so many "branded" channels. MTV is a great example - The name of course, originally stood for Music TeleVision and it aired music videos nearly 24/7. Now that channel is full of 'reality' TV and series and little if any music or video content. The programming on lots of other branded channels looks nothing like it did when they first went on the air, or in some cases, wandered so far from the original concept that they renamed and rebranded them.

TNN (The Nashville Network) became Spike TV and then Paramount Network
Outdoor Life Network eventually became NBCSN and will be shutting down in the coming months
Court TV began airing more reality and action TV shows, and eventually became TruTV
Channels like Nickelodeon, TV Land, History and others air much different programming than they once did

I highly doubt that the CNN brand will go away. It has a 41 year history. They more likely will modify the product, maybe simply call it “The new CNN”. But, yeah, big changes are inevitable.
