Turner Networks To Air 41 March Madness Tournament Games

http://www.multichannel.com/article/463763-Turner_Networks_To_Air_41_March_Madness_Tournament_Games.php

TNT will air 12 games, including second round and third round matchups, while TBS will air a total of 16 contests, including games in the second and third round and Sweet 16, said the Turner officials.
TruTV will air the tournament's first four games as well as 13 total games during the first and second round. The network will also air the Reese's College All-Star Game on Friday, April 1 as part of the NCAA Final Four Sunday.

So there you go. The start of another migration of sports to cable.

All the games were only available in some markets that were cleared by CBS to multicast. And when the digital switch occurred, the amount of games broadcast fell in half.

Now EVERYBODY, from New York to LA (not just Phoenix or Raleigh or Columbus) gets ALL the games.

Well, we knew that Turner cable networks would be in on March Madness starting this year... now we know how much coverage they will air.

It's probably not relevant to this, but does anyone remember the old Goodwill Games that used to air on TBS?

Its great for people who want to see a different game that their local CBS station isn't airing. Also I would think CBS will still have the regional coverage meaning your local CBS station will get the game with the two teams closest to that market.

I don't think that's the case. Games on the Turner networks will not be seen on CBS, even in the home markets.

So that type of regional coverage isn't in effect?

Right. No more regional coverage.

NCAA.com's got the full breakdown (CLICK HERE), but these are the basics for this year (and through 2015)...

WEEK 1: Tru has the "First Four" games to themselves. Thursday and Friday all four carry the rounds of 64 evenly. Over the wekend all carry the round of 32 in some way - CBS gets 7 games, TBS & TNT get four each, Tru gets one on Sunday.

WEEK 2: On Thursday and Friday CBS and TBS will split up the round of 16. From Saturday forward CBS goes from the regional finals to the trophy (which is week 3).

I've no idea if CBS College Sports will be carrying replays on the off-days as they have before.

As long as March Madness on Demand at NCAA.Org is still intact I couldn't give a red rat's butt about this.

The video steaming, assuming it's still offered, will be on NCAA.com.

I was going to post something similar but you beat me to it. :)

What I'd add is that Turner (or the NCAA) seems to think that TBS is the strongest channel for the later rounds. I would have guessed TNT, just going by their coverage of the NBA games.

I think the reason Turner feels TBS is the stronger channel because it acts more like a broadcast network then a cable network sort of. Also TBS in many areas is part of basic cable.

And about because TNT has the NBA rights doesn't mean their a strong network for NCAA Basketball. Many people who watch NCAA Hoops don't watch the NBA. Because the NBA is more for money unlike NCAA Hoops.

TBS last year passed the 100mil cable homes threshold.

Sadly, our local cable company doesn't have truTV HD yet (you have a month, Cox...)

Like here. TBS is a basic channel, and TNT is too. They both have prime channel positions between 2-13. TBS has been on Channel 12 for decades, and TNT on Channel 4. truTV is also on expanded basic with Comcast.

However, a lot of systems don't have truTV. It sucks that some of these games might not air in HD everywhere, but it's great that the entire NCAA tournament will be aired. It's much better than last year, when Clemson and Wofford (two in-state teams) played at the same time.

WCSC, of course, picked Clemson, and Wofford went unaired unless you went online or had Mega March Madness, and it wasn't even on the CBS in the Upstate, instead, it was on their CW sister station. Now, everyone would be able to get both games.

One thing I never said in my other posts. Are the graphics going to be the same as CBS Sports uses? Only difference I can see when the games are on TBS, TNT, and TruTV is the bottom right graphic in the score ticker to show the networks logo instead of showing NCAA on CBS. Also no CBS eye transparent logo in the top right.

Would any of you be surprised if the years where the Thursday afternoon/Friday afternoon first round games airing on CBS might soon be numbered considering this new broadcasting arrangement (along the lines of complaints by soap and "The Talk" fans that their shows are being preempted for just two days due to hoops)?
