Now that analog is a dead duck and sold to the highest bidder, who's next is it AM or FM?
I'm willin' to bet it's both at once and within the next 5 years.

I hope come February 17 WRGB-TV will go off the air at 87.7 FM to become WRGB-DT. I hope channel 6 will be off the radio dial at 87.7. We'll see what happens.

It looks like, if im reading things right, WRGB-TV will remain on Channel 6 for DTV operations:

However, since DTV is a different animal, DTV operations on Channel 6 won't be recievebale on a radio on the FM dial anymore.

This change has been a long time coming . Especially since 9/11 the plan is to give much of the spectrum to emergency services .On that horrible day NYC police and fire departments could not communicate directly. AM would be useless for any use you mentioned because of inference factors. In any event neither band is going anywhere , they provide important service now . There was large portions of the UHF-TV band that was not being used . The channels are being consolidated and the excess will be put to other use .

Only 4 TV channels worth, of the 18 TV channels being taken away, will be for Public Safety. A small portion will be used for a "pre-emptable" service, which would be used commercially, then taken away for big emergencies....but, no one seems interested in cutting a deal with those restrictions.
The rest of the bandwidth is to be sold, and will most likely be used for internet TV and other pay services.
So, it'll still be TV....but, it'll be "Pay TV" ;).

BTW, TV already lost channels 70-83 long ago. It seems that pay services trump free-to-the-public services.
