Two New Logs - and the biggest domestic log of the year? 2/13/2013

Last night was AWESOME for DX! I was picking up the Midwest like locals on some channels, and many channels turned into graveyard soup! Two new logs came out of that.

1180 - Radio Rebelde Cuba; finally heard with match to 5.025 and tropical music. NEW #475, 50 (or more KW), 2700+ miles! Never heard the 670 (would be relog), or the 710 (would be new) which the 710 I needed. 2245 PST.

1160 - Probably the biggest Midwest log of the year for me!! WYLL CHICAGO under KSL with Christian program up to fair levels but not breaking over UT. Then mention of "AM 1160" and a pastor program Sunday mornings, as well as a Chicago mention. I am betting their pattern was out of whack last night! NEW #476, 50kw, 1705 miles!! I do have the other four non-impossible blasters in the log (670, 720, 780, 890) so I think I've wiped Chicago off my list! But this was the shocker of the night! 2259 PST.

UNIDs
1570 - UNID program with a Christian nature. Heard o/u CKMW, and at TOH never heard again. East bearing. Thinking it's either KPIO Loveland, CO (980 mi, and I think I heard it in Yakima, WA one night) or KBCV Hollister, MO at 1649 miles.
1590 - UNID with non-stop oldies. Heard "Old Time Rock and Roll" Bob Seger, and "You Can't Hurry Love" Phil Collins at 2245. Then waiting for TOH I heard "Pretty Woman" Roy Orbison into another song with no ID as other stations started TOH news! Nothing listed in TopazDesigns, and KQLO-NV says SS News/Talk (needed). Closest seems to be KDAV-TX, but why would I be getting a 1kw from Texas.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS
780 WBBM Chicago fair u/ KKOH, but conditions better as you got upward.
550 KBOW Butte destroying OR, WA
1040 WHO u/ CKST
1120 KMOX under KANN Utah under KPNW.
1200 WOAI San Antonio, LIKE A LOCAL!! Every word heard as if I was a couple of hundred miles away. CJRJ gone!
1500 KSTP very good signal
1540 KXEL Waterloo like a LOCAL! Best ever! Trucking ads at 2257 PST
1600 sounded like 1450 - nothing that I could decipher, even KVRI!!
1630 KRND with possibly another station under - based on conditions it could've been KCJJ.

Crain--

Congrats on WYLL. They shoot a lot of power north so it's not that hard to believe that you could hear it. Hell, if I can get KOMO on the Northern Ireland receiver then anything is possible.

First of all, this was using the 3 foot box loop and variable capacitor. See, it does work on Midwest DX after all! I slightly tuned KSL out and got the other (WYLL) in.

Second - last night I was hearing the UNID 1590 once again. PSA lead into non-ID "Oldies 1590" into a Discover the Forest PSA at 2230 PST last night 2/14. Then into the jumble soup it went. KQLO Sun Valley is SS News/Talk, and nothing is listed in skip range other than 1400+ mi away Lubbock! And WAKR? In my dreams! Any Western DXers far away from a 1590 should check this frequency out! Paging boiseengineer...

For what it's worth I've heard WAKR here in Texas, just over a thousand miles WSW of Akron.

WBBM and WOAI are both common winter relogs. But WOAI was at "best-ever" levels!

Nice catches, crainbebo and especially Radio Rebelde from Cuba!

A Cuban AM station heard in Washington state is awesome.

Well bad news - 1590 is solved, and it's KTIL Tillamook. :( They do True Oldies Channel after 9PM now. So no worries on getting something exotic on 1590!

Nicely done, crainbebo. I wonder if WYLL might have been a polar path, given that they they protect KSL to the west. Whatever, it's still a great catch.

As for 1180, I just arrived today at our usual beach spot near Pensacola, where the Cubans have a good signal 24/7. Surprisingly, however, I don't usually hear them at home near Chicago, where WHAM owns the channel at night.

Have you tried your luck with Cuba on 530? My apologies if you have and already posted something. They don't exactly have an overwhelming signal, but given that the channel is all but vacant, they're quite widely heard. Here where I am for the next ten days near Pensacola on the Florida-Alabama state line, they're also audible 24/7. but not as strong as 1180 (or 670). Easy to identify the Cuban 530. Instrumental "elevator music" with female announcers. (They do go spmewhat more uptempo during whatever the Cuban equivalent is of "morning drive").

530 is blank even with the loop. My variable capacitor does very poorly that down in the band. Schroedingers Cat said that it would require about 100+ more pF on the 365 pF capacitor to even make a difference on 530 khz. If I hear anything it's very weak carriers of TIS stations.

Nice catch on WYLL 1160. I heard the Christian talk with the female host, but wasn't able to ID anything, it would fade out during TOH. That was a couple nights before you logged it. It was very odd hearing something behind KSL, as it usually is alone on that frequency.

There's always next time...

RE; the Christian station on 1570: I heard a Christian program on 1570 last Spring, it was Vernon McGee's Through the Bible, faded up and then out, and the bearing was NW-SE. Very weak, but readable when it faded up. I wonder if it was the same station you heard. Usually on 1570 I hear KCVR (now with ESPN Deportes), XERF, and sometimes CKMW in Manitoba.

Could be KBCV Hollister, MO at over 1600 miles. They air "Thru the Bible" at 6AM CT weekdays. (4AM PT)

FWIW, here on the gulf near Pensacola, the Cuban 530 seems a little weaker than on past visits.  Still audible 24/7 but perhaps some reduction in power.  I also still was able to hear them in the Chicago area a couple of nights ago before I left for here.

1020 KHz 8 PM MST CBS News fades up & out. Then @ 10:32 PM CBS News Update into Bohannon.
hmmmm...!?!
It IS KDKA! AAA-KDKA promotional ad

All this on an old SRF-A100

Never mind on that last post. SUPER catch boiseengineer! Can you check 1060 out for me and see if KYW is making it? Also, 1220 for the low power stuff. KDDR Oakes, ND could be a possibility. I'd even check 700.

P.S.: Very weak flutter on 1020 u/ very strong KWIQ, but could just be NM. I also had the old CKVH-AB before it went off.
Also WBAP fair u/ KGNW. No WBBM or other Chicagoans.

Yes it is KDKA (modified previous post). They come up out of the noise every few minutes or so and are very readable.
KCKN (thinkthey're the one about -200 hz off) & KTNQ are strong tonight but off axis from KDKA.
Union Gap/Moses Lake not a factor.

ESPN promo came up out of the mud once.

Probably 20 years since I last heard them.

Not heard here...YET. Still looking for KTNQ Los Angeles. Also almost had KHJ once but no IDs at all - just a woman blabbing in SS constantly (this was during an aurora opening last year).

10PM: 1170 KFAQ Tulsa Fox News just heard here, under the strong blast of KPUG. Betting boiseengineer gets that - A LOT. I've yet to hear KCBQ San Diego, one of pianoplayer's locals, but I'm still searching for them.
