Ugly Betty's Vanessa Williams comes to Desperate Housewives

In fact, her new character will be like An African-American version of Edie Britt, played by Nicolette Sheridan-A single housewife who has a connection to the show's 4 Main Characters: Gabby, Bree, Lynette, & Susan. I believe the producers finally found what they're looking after Nicolette left the show, and Vanessa will in fact become the new main character, Replacing Dana Delany & Drea De Matteo.

I hope the writers know what to do with her. Delany and De Matteo weren't used very well. It seems too many new characters are introduced, get their all-too-brief day in the sun and then are hung out as fractional characters until finally dropped for good. The Black family, the gay guys, Delany and probably more I can't think of at the moment.

The first season of DH was the best because they stuck to a smaller core of characters and emphasized the dark humor. It fell off the tracks during season two and IMHO has never returned to that season one level.

I'll probably be watching.....if my wife makes me.

All they have to do is look to what Ugly Betty's writers did and copy it.

Desperate Housewives has run its course. Time for ABC to pull the plug on that show. Maybe the network could have the Women of Wisteria Lane board an airplane and the plane crashes on an island. Nah. That's been done already.

And not very well.

It's kept by ABC because the ratings are solid. I think the main 4 actors have agreed only until next season though, so the next season could be the last one.

I think I remember reading some weeks ago that Marc Cherry, the producer, said only two more seasons after 2010.

They better try to stay on the show as long as possible. Future success is NOT guaranteed in the world of television and film.

That's easily observable you've got notable, near or once A-list movie talent (including Jeff Goldblum, Laurence Fishburne, Sharon Stone, Holly Hunter, and Forrest Whitaker) coming in for steady TV paydays.

Precisely! Honestly, if I were in television on a hit show, I would try to stretch my 15 minutes of fame as long as possible. I'm glad Vanessa's coming to Desperate Housewives, although I believe that Ugly Betty had one more season left in it (if ABC had stopped moving it from one day to the next).

True, but possibly the actresses, my guess Eva Longoria and Felicity Huffman, could have a future in some film and other film/tv roles, and wouldn't want to lose candidancy for roles, because of being typecasted. Perhaps Marc Cherry would figure if atleast 2 of the original 4 agreed to the 2011-2012 year, with the addition of Vannessa Williams and the side characters, the show would continue. This even though it's almost certain that in last year the ratings would drop significantly.

Not surprised by this. Not counting the steady paychecks (which can be a lot of cash), can give inputs to their roles and good work schedule, this is another way to get noticed. Plus the actor gets a chance to either reinvent themselves or remind the public why they liked the actor.

I wonder if the 'stigma' of movie actors doing regular TV is gone? Hopefully now we can work on "he/she is just a soap opera actor."

I think this is what Marc Cherry wants, and the fans have all finally do agree; I believe Vanessa's character would be married to a white guy (on the show), but the feeling is pretty much mutual; After 2 marriages and four kids, she's very happy to be a proud single mom.

If you'll notice, with the exception of Forrest Whitaker who was always a character actor, all of those names belong to actors over 50. Good film roles start coming farther and farther apart when actors hit their late 40s - especially for the women.

I think the stigma of film actors "lowering themselves" to work in TV is largely gone. TV writing and production is much better than it used to be. Some of the iconic and memorable roles of the last decade have been in television productions. Just 2 examples: Michael Chiklis in The Shield, and James Gandolfini in The Sopranos. While Gandolfini has worked often in film, it's been primarily in supporting roles. Chiklis has actually gotten some film roles recently on the strength of his TV work.

Me too. I'll miss the show.
