Uh, forget, uh, Caribe Devine, we, uh, have someone, uh worse

Some time back, we had a thread criticizing Caribe Devine for her horrible speaking skills. She's improved greatly since then (coincidence, I'm sure).

Now we have another newscaster better suited for newspaper, I think. It's another weekend weatherguesser, Randy Kollins of KPHO-TV. I don't know where this guy came from (he doesn't have a bio on KPHO.com), but when I was in high school in the late '70s, he wouldn't have received a passing grade on an oral book report. As a person who speaks in public all the time, at least once a week, I can understand nervousness, but this is his job. It's not like this is some 100+ market; Phoenix is #13. Doing the, uh, weather and, uh, a newscast should have a higher degree of, uh, professionalism, don't you think?.

On your advice, and because I can always use a good laugh, I turned to the Saturday 2 Sept 10:00 p.m. weathercast. Mr. Kollins started off shaky, got worse in the middle, and ended better. He had a lot of noticeable 'uhs' especially when giving city rain totals around the valley.

I say we give him another month before we call for his head.

After paying Kent and Seen, KPHO can't afford any decent talent. Thus, we have Randy... They are going to have a solid "A" team, but the rest of the talent is mediocre, at best!

I haven't seen him on the air at KPHO...but if this is the same guy I am thinking of Mr. Kollins held a fill-in position at KNXV several years ago...Ed Phillips days...also held a similar position many many years ago at KTVK. ( I have several friends who used to produce at ABC 15) and back in Randy's KNXV days...producers would routinely cut the allotted time for weather when he was filling in...
You may also have seen Mr. Kollins in a long running infomercial for a real estate thing...John Beck I think was the name of the infomercial dude...now those infomercials are co-hosted by a man and a woman along with John Beck.

Regards,
IMONTV

Mr. Kollins wasn't on TV this weekend, or I missed him during one of the weathercasts.

One weekend and out?

In mid-July, I posted in the Sean to KPHO thread that CBS-5 had two new faces bringing the weather. One was Randy Kollins and the other was Steve Garry. I Googled Garry and found that he was a former TV weather person and was also listed as an instructor at ASU Hugh Downs School of Human Communications. At that time I posed the question, "was someone else departing 5 and were these two auditioning"? Since no one responded, one can guess that these two were spot hires to fill the void during vacations and until the mighty new Chief Meteorologist arrived.
