"Uncle" Floyd Vivino, New Jersey entertainer and TV personality

If you grew up in the New York metropolitan area during the 70s and '80s–and specifically from North Jersey–you probably have seen The Uncle Floyd Show at least once. Between local public-access cable and broadcast television (WBTB-TV/WTVG/WWHT, WNBC-TV, and New Jersey Network), the program ran for close to 30 years.

He played the piano, told jokes with Oogie, did comedy skits with his ensemble of performers, and introduced viewers to local rock bands. Uncle Floyd continued to maintain a live performance schedule after the TV show wrapped, until he suffered a stroke in 2023.

I included a brief history of Uncle Floyd in the article at the UHF History site about WRTV/58 Asbury Park NJ.

It was, admittedly, a sidebar, but his television career began at WBTB-TV/68 Newark, which WRTV's owner was responsible for applying for originally.

John Lennon was a big fan of The Uncle Floyd Show. He even recommended it to David Bowie. Music guests included The Ramones, The Boomtown Rats and Cyndi Lauper.

Too bad his show's syndication was brief. We got it in Chicago on WPWR, then on Channel 60, for about a year in 1982-83. It was the best entertainment program airing in Chicago at the time, except for Bozo.
