Emmis droppping of Jazz on WQCD 101.9 in favor of Rock for WRXP was moved by their research showing there was a need for another Rock station in New York.
Besides a dropping in listenership for CD 101.9, it also attracted a sizable audience of 50-60 year olds which is somewhat above the main target demo. Sixty year olds don't attract the same dollars than a 30 year old, according to Madison Avenue.
Also, stations that have a large Black listenership (jazz formatted stations do attract a larger Black listener base than other White formats) don't bill as well as mainstream formats. WBLS & WRKS (Kiss-FM) have been fighting for their share in advertising dollars vs. their listenership.
With the PPM's showing that Rock is one of the top formats in radio, could Black radio be in trouble?
