Unidentified jazz/big band on 740 AM near Seattle

Hello!

I was driving the other day near Seattle, where I ran across something interesting on 740 KHz. I heard what sounded like big band and/or jazz. The signal was not overly strong, with KCBS 740 from San Francisco overriding most of it. Any thoughts on what the station might have been? I think that it might have been CFZM.

There was supposed to be a station licensed to(I believe)Redmond but they finally gave up on it, after various changes in facilities. It was for 50KW daytime and significant power at night, which they kept changing.

CBX Edmonton runs music programming sometimes. They are often heard mixing with KCBS. CFZM is leaning towards 1960s to even 1980s nowadays but sometimes throws in something older, and I'm sure there's Christmas songs on there now.

Unless its been recently discontinued, CFZM has had a long-running weekly nighttime big band show. Otherwise, yes, pre-rock era pop and big band music has been removed from CFZM's regular playlist. 60s and 70s gets the bulk of the airplay with a smattering of 50s and 80s.

CFZM isn't commonly heard at night in Seattle, at least not in my location. It's usually KCBS and CBX. My guess is you heard a jazz show on the CBC out of Edmonton.

I agree with all of the above comments. The station I heard was likely CBC Radio One. I was still happy to catch it, but it would have been cool to catch CFZM. The show sounded like a "Shake Rattle Showtime" episode (or an identical twin), so that is why I ruled out CBX. Maybe some other day I'll have a shot at an east coast station!

Don't give up hope. I heard CFZM -- by accident, actually -- about three months ago. Also heard another Ontario station on 640 the same night. Lucky to catch ID's, and the snippets of programming matched. They were under the dominant stations I here on those channels most nights.

I assume you hear KFI as the dominant 640. I wonder what you heard underneath?

The news station out of Toronto. Caught an ID. Have to look up the calls.... It's CFMJ. They run Coast to Coast, other similar programming.

Only heard them once. And yes, KFI was dominant. The only other signals I've heard on 640 were Spanish language that was so weak I couldn't even read the Spanish. Very rare, too.

I think all I've heard other than LA on 640 is Cuba and the now-defunct KGVW Belgrade MT. I had a very faint sports station one spectacular night which was likely WWLS OKC, but I had no ID on it.

I used to get KGVW Belgrade MT 640 too, back around 2012 or 2013. Then it went off the air. It never came in well.

Driving from LA to Flagstaff on the I-40 two nights ago, KFI was really struggling to come in and at times a Spanish language station was dominant on top. Was this Cuba I heard as far west as Barstow, CA?

The most common interference with KFI is the co-channel in Cd. Juarez, Chih, Mexico. I get it often both on the 10 and the 40 going towards the AZ border.
