Univision Deportes Nets Broadcast Rights for 18 Liga MX Matches

This article is poorly written.

What they actually did is secure the rights to all 18 teams in Liga MX.

Teams in Liga MX sell their own broadcast rights for home matches, both in Mexico and the United States — this is a different model from most soccer leagues. Since there is one promoted/relegated team a year, churn is low. In this case, Lobos BUAP was the team that got promoted — and signing them gave Univision the whole kit and caboodle.

In Mexico, team rights are a big deal. The three terrestrial broadcasters (Televisa, Azteca and Imagen) own four of the 18 top-flight teams. Chivas, one of the largest clubs, attempted to force all its Mexican rights through an OTT service but ultimately signed a cable deal. Some matches are satellite-exclusive to Televisa's Sky platform.

Teams also have designated slots for their home matches, determined by TV considerations.

Additionally, there's a blackout rule: home games cannot be broadcast to home cities if the stadium is not full, per Mexican Football Federation guidelines.

Of the 18 teams:

-8 teams are signed to Televisa and air on one of its broadcast networks, or for Lobos BUAP, on Sky only
-6 squads' rights are held by TV Azteca
-Chivas TV is the primary broadcaster for Chivas, though the games are carried on a Televisa-owned cable channel
-Imagen directly holds the rights to Querétaro FC, which the company owns
-Claro Sports (América Móvil/Carlos Slim) owns the rights to Pachuca and León which are onsold to Fox Sports and to Imagen (they also own a stake in both teams)
