UNPACKING THE MILLION LITTLE PIECES of SYNDICATION.

ALL--

Hello!

I adore the R-I board, and figured that I would turn to all of you for some much needed advice.

Here is the deal:

I have created a show (a five minute segment) that I would love to have aired on Progressive Rock stations. Ideally, I want to sell my five minute segment directly to PDs. Board, (1) has this been done before? (2) And if so, any ideas as to how? (3) How is pricing determined?

I am also wondering: (4) Do PDs who work for the the big radio corporations, have the authority to add (and subsequently buy) a radio show--or will my show idea get lost in the corporate shuffle; and (5) Is there an ideal business quarter for approaching a PD with a show idea for sale, e.g., first quarter, fourth quarter.

And yes, I am asking this board to literally tear my idea to shreds--that is exactly why I am posting here--you guys know your stuff.

Unless you are some big name - NOBODY will BUY your show. What kind of personal payola will you give the pd?

Actually, You need to first find a sponsor so the station would get the program in exchange for running the ad in the show. HOW are you getting the program to the station? cd? Satellite? A radio networK? We visited about 400 radio stations, personally, during that time. You might want to look up "Hit Parade Radio" - presently syndicating their format, and making use of the internet.

Go to the library and get a Broadcasting Yearbook, look up "syndicators" and make some phone calls.

2 Partners and I did a 2 hour long live, syndicated sports show about 15 years ago and it was on in over 100 markets for 2 years. It made a ton of money and nearly killed 3 people, working hard. We bopught time in the top 3 markets (so we could tell stations we were on there) and bartered the rest.

Good luck!

PS - You asked, "has this been done before?" Well, Amos and Andy (Freeman Gosden & Charles Correll) invented it, between their being on wgn (Sam and Henry) and their being on NBC somewhere around 1930. Google it.

PPS You're Welcome!
