Unusual weather delay in NBC's Sunday Night Football telecast

The game was delayed 1.5 hours due to dangerous weather conditions. The Cowboys pulled off a rare 20 to 17 win at 1 AM ET. Makes me wonder what the longest national televised delay in a prime time sports broadcast was. There will be a lot of tired fans this morning.

Makes me wonder what the longest national televised delay in a prime time sports broadcast was.

There are rain delays in baseball all the time. They can't play baseball in pouring rain. I've seen rain delays go on for several hours before the game gets canceled or played. Typically, there are other games the networks can switch to. Not so with Sunday Night Football.

Football can be played in just about any kind of weather. Lightning, tornados and hurricanes are about the only exceptions.

last night's Sunday Night Football game was the closest NBC had to a regular non-playoff sporting event go way into the early morning hours since the 2015 Coke Zero 400 at Daytona on July 5th, 2015. the race didn't start until 11:30 PM ET/8:30 PM PT due to storms in the Daytona area that delayed the start of the first NASCAR Cup Series race on NBC since the 2006 season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, the race was ran on a Sunday night instead of a Saturday night due to NBC wanted it to air on Sunday to mark their return to NASCAR broadcasting and also to avoid conflict with the New York City 4th of July fireworks show the day before. the race didn't end until almost 3 AM ET/12 AM PT due to the late start and the race ended with a crazy crash which saw Austin Dillon's #3 car go into the catchfence by the start/finish line while Dale Earnhardt Jr. took the checker flag to win the race.

Reminds me of the Thundersnow Bowl game between the Dolphins & Steelers on Monday Night Football some years ago when the skies opened up JUST as they were going to kickoff. If I recall right, the game was delayed for over half an hour & was one of THE SLOPPIEST games in NFL history lol

Eagles/Bears, January 1990 playoff game at Soldier Field, for one.

That wasn't called off, though, they played that one with no delay. I remember watching it. The cameras were close enough to still get pretty decent views, but it was crazy watching it when a play went off out of view.

I DEFINITELY remember that race!

I still have a recording of that race on a VHS tape somewhere.

My local NBC affiliate, KSHB-TV, Ch. 41 in Kansas City, MO, had to tape their late newscast that evening, likely at 10PM, to air after the race which meant that they couldn't show a live radar during their weather forecast during that newscast.
