UPDATE: WGST says three people out in news department including Kari Dean

My original source overhyped it a bit. I finally got a hold of Randall Bloomquist, the new PD over at WGST-AM. He said the news department is simply "reorganizing," which included letting go Kari Dean, Chris Bailey and Vanessa Jones. But he said they are hiring.

“We remain fully committed to news and local news,” he said. "There is no reduction in force."

What does that mean for GST? A format flip?

Not sure exactly. No return calls yet from Randall Bloomquist or Jerry Del Core. It just may be cost cutting.

I've stuck with GST through Boortz, Hannity, Mertz, Dave Stone, Glenn Beck, The Kimmer and now Denny Shaffer. I always thought their news department did a decent job fo what they had to work with. I thought someone needs to give these guys a shot against WSB, and to be honest, I never understood the big love fest with 750 anyway, other than their signal. Now it seems that GST has given up on itself and admit total defeat. This really pisses me off. they can't expect the listeners to be loyal and patient, when they can't even be loyal to themselves.

The invoice for Braves broadcast rights just came in the mail.

Re: Source: WGST news staff flushed out

It isn't everybody. They still staff Georgia News Network, and they are running updates at the top and bottom of hour. Anybody know who got the ax?

Re: Source: WGST news staff flushed out

Can anybody here actually make the argument that the money it cost WGST to staff their newsroom was money well spent, given that they were up against WSB's massive news presence?

Boo hoo. Their 15 listeners can weep.

Re: Source: WGST news staff flushed out

So, Kari Dean gets fired...Gossett quits......Hughes' contract is about to not be renewed, the entire newsroom gets blown out right before Christmas, and the scary-talented duo of Pete Davis and Wayne are filling in (with the fascinating topic of "what's your favorite cartoon character" no less) because the Kimmer suddenly isn't on the air today. That noise you hear is the plane crashing into the mountain.

All this drama over a freekin 1.5 share. Who cares anymore. Bring a truckload of dynamite into the hallways, light the fuse, and run. It's the dead horse that just won't die.

Didn't Paul Mann recently leave his GST News Director position to be ansst news director for a clear channel station in houston? He must have knew something. I say they flip to sports radio. This town needs 3 sports talk station pullin less 1.5 each.

when did gossett quit. I don't listen to Kimmer much anymore but when I have I have not heard a newsmaker line?

> radiopimpin put it best. all this drama for a 1.5 share radio station. "more than just the headlines" uh ah. what a joke. shut the damn thing off. Bloomquist, Collins, Parker, Charles, Hobbs, doesn't matter who the PD is, it is and has been dead in the water for years. RIP

Flip to sports? If that's gonna happen, somebody forgot to tell Tony Snow. His show will debut on WGST this Sunday.

How long has Kari Dean been with GST? I know she was as WSB years ago and moved to 94.5 PCH with Dale O'Brien.

I'd agree that WSB is a pathetic station but then I'd get bounced out of here. Sorry, I don't see the big deal about a station that puts an overplayed, doesn't-deserve-to-syndicated conservative in denial on for nearly five hours and a sleep-inducing "consumer champion" talking about the best place to buy lima beans in their midday roster. I'm leaving work at 3 o'clock, what sounds more interesting... a national show talking about this week's Costco flyer, or a local talk show.

Having spent a long time in Cleveland, Denny Schaeffer did very well at WSPD, but as much as WSB and their incessant refeeds (yes, Cox, there are nighttime shows available in syndication) perturb me, WGST is a mere shadow of them. Although the way this board makes it out to be, they'll probably flip to Latvian polka tomorrow! C'mon, for the second-string non-heritage talker with a night pattern that puts every host after 7pm in the Witness Protection Program they're not that bad 12+. Unless it's hailing outside or the world is in shambles, I don't see a need to listen to WSB. But oh well.

I've listend to GST since '89 and after all this time I mostly prefer them to WSB. During the newsbreaks I'd rather listen to them. It's funny, as a listener I don't really know about whatever turmoil is going on, then come here and read about the end of the world for 640. I'm not always happy with their changes (like Phil Hendrie being moved earlier). I hope they don't do some radical flip.

Rodney, did Randall comment on why he fired APD Rick DiLorenzo?
