Urban One to Acquire KKDA and KRNB, Divest KZMJ

I don't particularly see them going outside their urban wheelhouse in DFW... I wouldn't be at all surprised if Urban AC went to 97.9 and their Praise format arrived on 105.7.

I wouldn't be surprised if nothing changed at all. Getting rid of urban on either 97.9 or 104.5 would invite someone else to do it. Not that it couldn't happen, but Praise skews old, and urban gospel has never done well the handful of times it was tried in the past.

so they finna keep that same branding name and format on 105.7?

Your guess is as good as anybody else's at this point. Nothing else they could put on 105.7 would do any better than what's there now, though.

They’re not flipping K104. Most likely they’ll be some consolidation with The Beat, with Beat going away.

I could also see R1 testing DeDe in the Morning on some of their other urban stations, as The Morning Hustle performs poorly in most markets.

They’ll probably put KRNB on 97.9 and flip 105.7 to a non-urban format. I could also see them leave KRNB on 105.7 and launch a non-urban format on 97.9, but that is less likely because 105.7 doesn’t cover the urban audience well. I don’t see Praise, as R1 has been moving away from that.

I do think they'll likely drop Steve Harvey for Rickey Smiley on KRNB. Rickey was local on KBFB before he went syndicated company wide, and is currently based in Dallas. The only market where Radio One runs Harvey is Atlanta, and that's because Tom Joyner was already on WALR and they couldn't steal him away like in some other places.

K104 is not adding the Breakfast Club. They'll most likely keep DeDe in the Morning, as it has better ratings than MH, started out as a local morning show on KKDA, and is still syndicated out of the station. Radio One hasn't had a strong syndicated urban morning show since Rickey moved over to Urban AC. With DeDe now being in house for R1, I could see a scenario where she replaces The Morning Hustle on some of their urban outlets.

K104 losing a direct competitor will definitely help ratings and revenue wise. Makes no sense to keep K104 and Beat when they're both targeting the same audience. There is no full market Urban AC right now, as 105.7 and 94.5 are both rimshots. Not only is KRNB losing a competitor, but moving the format to 97.9 would finally give Dallas a full market Urban AC. Plus they still have 105.7 for something else. Radio One is definitely improving their position in the market.

The Praise format does well on paper in some markets, but is heavily 55+ and very difficult to sell. As a previous poster said, it’s no longer a format R1 is invested in launching.
RO’s Praise format had two runs in Houston from 2006-11 and 2021-24 on KROI. Ratings were poor to mediocre and skewed very old, which made it a tough advertising sell. The second time around it was basically a placeholder while RO awaited a station sale. It has also been on a HD-2 (KMJQ) since 2011, where it remains today.

No way RO will use it as a main format in DFW.

I'd assume Regional Mexican or Spanish CHR may be in play considering the fact that Urban One has been expanding its Spanish language offerings over the past two years or so, in DC, Indy and Columbus to name a few. If so, I'm assuming that it wouldn't be successful against Univision's cluster and La Grande. I could maybe see it beating one if not all of Mediaco's mediocre performers.

I have to disagree.

Don't really know about the Hip Hop side of things, but to put an Urban AC on a full signal will be a golden opportunity for Radio One. Look at the success KRNB is having on that weak signal.

I think Radio One will always test the Praise format in their markets, and with no more Heaven 97 here, that would be another opportunity.

Just my two cents...

Keep an ear on any RO HD subchannels in DFW.

This reminds us of the aborted attempt by RO in 2000 to launch a Gospel format on what was then KJOI 1190. Might have been a missed best opportunity to keep that signal somewhat relevant.

Iheart is not changing format again on 97.1...., they keeping the Eagle branding

I would never say never. There is no eternal commitment to Rock or "The Eagle" branding. If iHeart had a magic wand and could swap The Eagle for The Beat, I bet they would take that deal.

Like our previous discussions regarding Cumulus owning two somewhat overlapping country stations and DFW being at least a two full country station market....

Urban One is not going to blow up The Beat and put on Praise or something else that will leave a hole for iHeart or someone else.

If they do move RNB to 97.9, and I am not convinced that is a sure thing, and The Beat goes to 105.7, I would expect some optimizations and The Beat to likely be used as a flanker with more mainstream crossover or perhaps a more "no color lines" type presentation, but still with mostly the same Urban music. No way Praise or any variation of a black gospel format will be used on any of these signals.

RNB has done very, very well even with that limited signal. It would certainly do significantly better on 97.9, but nothing else will perform as well on 105.7 as Urban AC has and clearly no other operator is going to do that format on a full signal, so there isn't much competitive risk leaving it there.
